Hôtel construit entre 1656 et 1659 par l'architecte Jean Boullier. Il tient son appellation "Salé" de la charge de son propriétaire, Pierre Aubert de Fontenay, fermier des gabelles. Mise en place de dispositions architecturales nouvelles (corps de logis double en épaisseur, escalier théâtral, chapelle en surplomb). Mise au goût du jour au début du 18e siècle. Confisqué pendant la Révolution et utilisé comme dépôt national littéraire de 1795 à 1797. Au 19e siècle, il fut loué à des institutions d'enseignement, ce qui apporta de nombreuses transformations (construction de cours, d'amphithéâtres ; aménagement d'ateliers).
