Commandé par le gouvernement de la 3ème République au lendemain de la défaite de 1870, le monument était destiné à redonner confiance à la nation humiliée. La statue de Fremiet fut dressée en 1874, au centre de la place des Pyramides, non loin de l'endroit où l'héroïne avait été blessée lors de son infructueuse tentative pour entrer dans Paris. A l'origine, et jusqu'en 1914, cette effigie de Jeanne d'Arc fut le symbole de la reconquête. L'artiste, ayant fait une autre version du monument pour la ville de Nancy en 1889, remplaça 10 ans plus tard le cheval du monument parisien par une copie de celui de Nancy, ce qui lui valut de vives critiques.

History
Commissioned by the government of the Third Republic in the wake of the defeat of 1870, the monument was intended to restore confidence to the humiliated nation. Fremiet's statue was erected in 1874, in the center of place des Pyramides, not far from the place where the heroine was wounded during her unsuccessful attempt to enter Paris. Originally, and until 1914, this effigy of Jeanne d'Arc was the symbol of reconquest. The artist, having made another version of the monument for the city of Nancy in 1889, replaced ten years later the horse of the Parisian monument with a copy of that in Nancy, which earned him severe criticism.
