Historique

History
After the destruction in 1789 of the statue of Louis XIV executed by Girardon, a plaster effigy of the Republic was erected on the square from 1793 to 1800. On 4 July 1800, the construction of a column to the glory of France was decided; a project was then established by the architect Thierry, based on an idea by Vivant Denon. After the victory at Austerlitz, it was finally the architects Lepère and Gondouin who were entrusted with building the monument. The bronze from cannons taken from the Austrians and Russians was used for casting the bas-reliefs, which develop on the shaft in 22 revolutions. These sculptures, executed by 31 artists (including Bartolini, Beauvallet, Bosio, Clodion, Chaudet...), describe the campaign of 1805 from the camp at Boulogne to the peace of Presbourg. The design is by Pierre Bergeret, under the direction of Vivant Denon. The current statue of the Emperor situated at the summit is the third at this location; it is by Dumont. The building was demolished during the Commune, then restored.
