The largest Gothic church in Alsace after Strasbourg Cathedral, the church was built from 1265 to 1284 on the site of an earlier edifice from the beginning of the 11th century of which the bell tower remains. Construction was completed in the 14th century. The spire of the crossing tower was rebuilt in 1882 after a fire. Decorations dating from the construction had to be covered over in 1545. After the Revolution, refurbishment and raising of the floor level (80 cm), destruction of the rood screen, new whitewashing of the interiors. From 1822 to 1828, rearrangement of the choir and installation of new neo-Gothic stalls and altars. In 1860, uncovering of mural paintings of the 14th and 15th centuries in the transept and chapels. In 1875, the chapels received neo-Gothic painted décor. In 1967, the paintings of the 14th and 15th centuries were uncovered in the south arm (apostles, life and passion of Christ, Saint Christopher).
