Former medieval castle attested since the 12th century and demolished during the Thirty Years' War. The ruins of the castle are given by the City of Sélestat to the German Emperor William II in 1899. From 1901 to 1908, the latter has the building consolidated by architect Bodo Ebhardt. Drawing on extensive documentation, he carries out a restoration of the castle in its supposed state of the 15th century. The same restoration programme also applies to interior fittings, the painting of walls and vaults being entrusted to Léo Schnug, Strasbourg painter. Having become a veritable château-museum, it attracts many visitors. Ownership of the castle (formerly state property, ministry of culture) was transferred to the department on 1 January 2007.
