Historique

History
The construction of this building seems to date back to the late 12th century. No major addition or alteration has modified the regularity of the three-nave plan oriented towards the east, terminated at the east by an apse and two absidioles. A transept higher than the aisles and lower than the main nave draws the Latin cross. Above the crossing rises an imposing square tower which appears to have served as a keep in times of trouble. The capitals decorated with foliage, except one which features figures, support rib vaults with ribs. The square tower raised over the crossing of the nave and transept is pierced on each of its faces by three round arch bays divided into two by a little marble column. The raising pierced with square holes does not seem to relate to the primitive construction. The western portal is formed of a double arcature without central mullion, the springer common to the two arches forming a pendant key. The tympanum is decorated with a blessing Christ surrounded by the symbols of the four Evangelists. The sun and moon are also figured there, the latter in the aspect of a female figure whose wings are crescent-shaped and who holds a mirror. A series of angels decorates the unique voussure which surrounds this tympanum, the little columns decorating the wide splaying which precedes the door were to support other voussures which have been destroyed. Before the portal, a porch was built by Lafolhye, architect of the palace of Pau.
