History
The dwelling appears under the heading "l'Abadie" in the General Census of houses of the viscounty of Béarn in 1385. Later, the Protestants burned the lay abbey of Arette. This seems to have comprised, then, only a less important main dwelling whose walls were adorned and completed at the beginning of the 17th century by a second building of the same dimensions and same appearance, linked by a vast central staircase to form an ensemble approaching the constructions of François Mansard but with the characteristics of local constructions of the period. In the 18th century, the abbey belonged to merchants of Oloron who transformed the large rooms into apartments, those of the first floor being adorned with panelling. The main dwelling is pierced, at ground level, by four large windows with double wooden muntins and a door at the centre with a circular pediment. Inside, large fireplaces, one of which is monumentally decorated with bunches of grapes and baskets of fruit, adorn the principal rooms.
