Historique
Bastide fondée entre 1250 et 1259 par Alphonse de Poitiers. La ville, encore pro-anglaise en 1315, lutte contre ces derniers à partir des années 1350. Durant le 16e siècle, catholiques et huguenots se disputent la cité. En 1569, Monluc emporte le combat contre le capitaine protestant Arnaud de Clermont. Armand de Gontaud Biron emporte la place en juillet 1580, et en massacre les défenseurs huguenots. Ces derniers reprennent la ville. En 1652, le bourg aux mains des Frondeurs subit l'assaut des troupes royales. ££Les remparts datent de la seconde moitié du 13e siècle, de même que le château, remanié au 16e siècle. History
Bastide founded between 1250 and 1259 by Alphonse of Poitiers. The town, still pro-English in 1315, struggles against them from around 1350 onwards. During the 16th century, Catholics and Huguenots dispute the city. In 1569, Monluc carries the day against the Protestant captain Arnaud de Clermont. Armand de Gontaud Biron takes the place in July 1580, and massacres its Huguenot defenders. The latter retake the town. In 1652, the borough in the hands of the Frondeurs undergoes assault from royal troops. The ramparts date from the second half of the 13th century, as does the castle, reworked in the 16th century. The latter is a quadrilateral reinforced with three towers furnished with firing loopholes. The crown of the building has disappeared.
