Historique

History
In the archives of the former chapter of Dax, the church of Commensacq is cited for the 11th century. The building served as a defensive stronghold for the village, as evidenced by the visible loopholes on one of the chevets and the south nave. The two naves are vaulted with rib vaults. The transverse arches and part of the rib arches rest on large cylindrical pillars, one of which bears, in place of a capital, a reused frieze carved with animals and religious figures. The voûtains of the nave are decorated with 15th-century frescoes representing various subjects linked to Adam and Eve. The voûtains of the north nave also bear later frescoes representing the four Evangelists. The south choir, vaulted in broken barrel vault, includes an altar by the Mazetti brothers. Externally, the south nave is extended by a semi-circular chevet. The upper part is pierced by cruciform loopholes and small openings that gave light to the firing chambers arranged under the roof space. The portal opens under the bell tower, onto a small passage vaulted in broken barrel vault which gives access to the south nave.
