Abbaye fondée en 1080. Restes romans du cloître 1130-1140. Bâtiments abbatiaux 13e siècle, en partie ruinés par la guerre de Cent ans. Reconstruction partielle des Mauristes, fin 17e siècle. Prison de 1793 à 1795, puis pillage et destruction du monastère. Collège religieux de 1838 à 1858, avec construction de l'aile sud et prolongement de l'aile ouest. Ecole Normale de 1860 à l'incendie de 1910. A partir des années 1960, destruction des bâtiments du 19e siècle et consolidation des parties médiévales. L'aile ouest a été construite fin 17e siècle sur des bâtiments antérieurs, remaniée au 19e siècle, incendiée en 1910. La partie Est, sur laquelle s'appuyait le réfectoire, conserve des structures romanes. Les ajouts du 19e siècle ont été érigés sur des structures médiévales. Pour le réfectoire, vestiges romans et reconstruction du 13e siècle. La grange abbatiale est un bâtiment des 14e et 15e siècles, érigé sur des structures antérieures. La fontaine saint Gérard est d'origine très ancienne. Les murs de clôture ont été érigés fin 17e début 18e siècle par les Mauristes, sur l'emplacement de l'enceinte médiévale. Le jardin abrite les bases de nombreux bâtiments disparus (cloître...).
