La Tour du Grand Port est l'une des tours de défense d'une ancienne porte ouverte dans le mur d'enceinte de la ville. Les travaux de fortifications de Libourne prirent leur plus grand développement sous le règne d'Edouard III. L'enceinte fortifiée fut commencée en 1281 et terminée en 1341. Ces remparts, flanqués de tours, étaient percés de huit portes dont les quatre principales s'ouvraient aux extrémités des deux grands axes de la ville. La porte du Grand Port, dont la construction remonte au 14e siècle, portait le nom de Porte Richard en l'honneur d'un fils du Prince Noir né à Bordeaux en 1366. History
The Tower of Grand Port is one of the defensive towers of an ancient gateway opening in the encircling wall of the town. The fortification works of Libourne reached their greatest development under the reign of Edward III. The fortified enclosure was begun in 1281 and completed in 1341. These ramparts, flanked by towers, were pierced by eight gates of which the four main ones opened at the extremities of the two principal axes of the town. The gate of Grand Port, whose construction dates to the 14th century, bore the name of Porte Richard in honour of a son of the Black Prince born in Bordeaux in 1366. It opens between two tall round towers: the tower Richard and the tower Barrée. Of the gate itself there still remain substantial remains. It formed a wide ogival corridor equipped with all means of defence. Alone of all the gates of the enclosure, it possessed a wicket opening at night.
