Historique
L'ancienne enceinte du 13e siècle avait à peu près la forme d'un triangle. L'entrée se faisait par trois portes : celle du nord, démolie en 1830 ; celle de l'ouest qui fut couronnée d'un pavillon en 1587 pour servir d'hôtel de ville, disparue en 1852 ; la "porte du midi" ou "du château" qui existe encore. Les fortifications de la ville et du château ont été démantelées en 1624 par ordre de Louis XIII, puis au cours des dernières luttes religieuses. Cette porte est le dernier vestige de la citadelle de Castillon et a été remaniée au 19e et au 20e siècle pour servir d'habitation. Des traces d'arrachement attestent qu'elle était pourvue d'un ouvrage avancé. Elle se compose de trois niveaux : le passage voûté en arc brisé côté rivière et plein cintre côté rue ; deux étages aujourd'hui aménagés.

History
The old enclosure of the 13th century had roughly the form of a triangle. Access was made by three doors: that of the north, demolished in 1830; that of the west which was crowned by a pavilion in 1587 to serve as town hall, disappeared in 1852; the "southern gate" or "castle gate" which still exists. The fortifications of the city and castle were dismantled in 1624 by order of Louis XIII, then during the last religious conflicts. This gate is the last vestige of the citadel of Castillon and was remodelled in the 19th and 20th centuries to serve as a dwelling. Traces of removal testify that it was provided with an outwork. It is composed of three levels: the passage vaulted in pointed arch on the river side and round arch on the street side; two storeys now fitted out.
