Historique
Après la place de la Bourse, celle de Gambetta (ancienne place Dauphine) est l'ensemble architectural urbain le plus important de Bordeaux. Les principales voies y aboutissent. Elle est entourée d'immeubles de la seconde moitié du 18e siècle, bâtis suivant une ordonnance classique. Vers 1745, l'intendant de Tourny, poursuivant son oeuvre d'assainissement et d'embellissement de la ville, ordonna la formation d'une place sur des terrains situés à l'ouest des portes Dauphine et Dijeaux. La place ne fut achevée qu'entre 1770 et 1780, mais le style reste celui de la première moitié du 18e siècle. A chacun des angles de la place rectangulaire s'ouvrent deux artères importantes. Le cours Georges Clémenceau est l'une des rues transversales y aboutissant.

History
After the Place de la Bourse, Gambetta Square (former Place Dauphine) is the most important urban architectural ensemble in Bordeaux. The main thoroughfares converge there. It is surrounded by buildings from the second half of the 18th century, built following a classical order. Around 1745, the intendant de Tourny, pursuing his work of sanitation and embellishment of the city, ordered the formation of a square on land situated to the west of the Dauphine and Dijeaux gates. The square was only completed between 1770 and 1780, but the style remains that of the first half of the 18th century. At each of the angles of the rectangular square open two important thoroughfares. Cours Georges Clémenceau is one of the cross-streets leading to it.
