Historique

History
The idea of a royal square and uniform façades of the quays along the Garonne took a long time to be accepted. In 1746, the intendant Claude Boucher obtained the approval of the jurats for the first creation of a quay. In 1729, Jacques Gabriel presents three projects. In 1731, Gabriel built the Douane quay and the façades of the architectures along its edge. Upon Boucher's death, Tourny takes up the project with Gabriel's son, Ange-Jacques. The monumental perspective was built in 1748 on the initiative of Aubert de Tourny. It is a homogeneous architectural arrangement which extends the place de la Bourse, former place Royale, facing the river. This arrangement comprises a ground floor and a mezzanine forming a plinth, inscribed in a series of round-arch arcades, then two large square storeys topped with a Mansard roof pierced with stone dormers. The plinth motif is underlined by rustication and rich sculptural motifs at the keystone of the arcades. The façades have sometimes lost their supports or their wrought-iron balconies, but they have retained their character thanks to their original framings and larmiers. Shops have been installed on the ground floor, sometimes damaging the arcades.
