The creation of a bishopric at Sarlat dates back to 1317. The first bishop of the diocese, Raymond de Roquecorn, took office on 2 July 1318. The first bishops of Sarlat did not however yet have an episcopal palace and had to make do with an old abbot's dwelling. In the second half of the 15th century, the latter was furnished with a staircase tower. However, it was between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th that a new episcopal palace was truly built. The building was subsequently enlarged at the end of the 17th century. With the Revolution, the episcopal palace housed the Town Hall as well as the seat of the police and a prison. Then, the Town Hall having moved in 1900, a covered market was installed on the ground floor of the building and a theatre on its first floor. One can also date from this period the loggia crowning its North façade. Since that time, the former episcopal palace has changed its purpose again and now houses the tourism office and exhibition halls.
