Historique

History
The château belonged in 760 to the counts of Périgord who sold it, in 890, to the monastery of Sarlat. The religious enlarged it. From the creation of the bishopric of Sarlat, in 1316, the château became the property of the bishops of Sarlat and remains so until the Revolution. Battles against the English left the château in ruins. In 1424, it is rebuilt. During the Wars of Religion, the château is set on fire in 1562. It is rebuilt in 1593. In 1652, the building is plundered and destroyed by the army of the Prince de Condé. It is raised from its ruins in 1662, becoming a comfortable dwelling in the middle of the quadrilateral formed by the curtain wall. The south-east tower is replaced by a hexagonal tower in which a staircase gave access to the château. In 1683, the château becomes the first seminary of the diocese of Sarlat. Confiscated in 1794, it is sold, serves as an agricultural building and eventually falls into ruin. ££The château comprises a quadrilateral enceinte furnished with two round corner towers and a square one. Originally, the residential and outbuildings leaned against the ramparts. The entrance, on the north face, was in projection on the wall, and comprised two gates at the ends of a vaulted passage. In the angles of this entrance rose two small machicolated turrets on stepped corbels. The north-east round tower contains a cistern. Against part of the south rampart rises the former castle chapel. The 15th-century château, rectangular, stands in the centre of the enceinte and comprises a round staircase tower on its east face. The south-east round tower has been transformed into a square tower, attached with a small building built on top of the rampart.
