Historique
Château dans lequel naquit Michel de Montaigne et où il écrivit "Les Essais". Après avoir été ravagé par plusieurs incendies, il fut entièrement reconstruit en 1884. La tour de la Librairie est la seule partie subsistante de l'ancien édifice qui se compose d'une tour ronde, d'une seconde tour ronde plus petite qui contient l'escalier à vis, et d'un petit corps de logis carré. La tour contient, au rez-de-chaussée, la chapelle où Montaigne baptisa ses enfants. Au premier étage se trouve la chambre du philosophe. Une petite trappe donnant sur un escalier dérobé permettait d'entendre la messe sans sortir de la pièce. A côté de la chambre, dans la tour carrée, se trouve le cabinet qui conserve encore des traces de peinture. Enfin, à l'étage se trouve la pièce de la librairie qui a conservé les 56 devises que Montaigne avait fait peindre sur les poutres de chêne.

History
Castle in which Michel de Montaigne was born and where he wrote "Les Essais". After having been ravaged by several fires, it was entirely rebuilt in 1884. The Library Tower is the only subsisting part of the old building which consists of a round tower, a second smaller round tower which contains the spiral staircase, and a small square dwelling body. The tower contains, on the ground floor, the chapel where Montaigne baptized his children. On the first floor is found the philosopher's chamber. A small trapdoor giving onto a hidden staircase allowed him to hear mass without leaving the room. Beside the chamber, in the square tower, is found the study which still retains traces of painting. Finally, on the upper floor is found the library room which has retained the 56 mottoes that Montaigne had painted on the oak beams.
