The castle platform was occupied from prehistoric times and has yielded deposits from the Magdalenian and Azilian periods. Under the name of Roc de Tayac, the primitive castle was built around the 13th century. In turn French and English during the Hundred Years War, the castle suffered from successive sieges and had to be rebuilt in the 16th century. In 1595, it underwent siege by the revolted Croquants. In 1606, the king ordered it to be dismantled, no doubt following the condemnation of Jean Guy de Beynac, implicated in the conspiracy of the Duke of Bouillon. The building is partly carved into the rock, partly constructed. Its defensive walls rise on a corbelled projection of the cliff. The rooms, corridors and staircases are carved into the rock. Access is by a round arch door with large voussoirs. This door gives access to a passage, partly built, partly carved, beneath the right-angled return building of the main façade and which bars access to the platform. The main dwelling, parallel to the cliff, had at its south-west corner a small corbelled turret.
