Historique
Ce clocher, dont la construction remonte au début du 14e siècle, est le seul vestige d'un important couvent de frères prêcheurs de Saint-Dominique ou Jacobins, construit à Belvés de 1318 à 1324. Le couvent comprenait une église, des cloîtres et des bâtiments conventuels. L'église, abandonnée, s'est effondrée en 1800. Les bâtiments, qui avaient subi d'importantes modifications au 17e siècle, ont eu différents usages (poudrerie, gendarmerie, école...). Le clocher seul est demeuré intact. History
This bell tower, whose construction dates to the early 14th century, is the sole vestige of an important convent of preaching friars of Saint-Dominique or Jacobins, built at Belvés from 1318 to 1324. The convent comprised a church, cloisters and conventional buildings. The church, abandoned, collapsed in 1800. The buildings, which had undergone substantial modifications in the 17th century, had different uses (powder mill, gendarmerie, school...). The bell tower alone remained intact. This arrangement of a square tower passing to the octagon by bevels at 45°, is found in the Agenais. Belvés appears to possess the sole Périgordian example. The upper storey is pierced with four large openings.
