Historique

History
No mention of the castle appears before the 14th century. Taken and ruined in 1442, during an episode of the Hundred Years War, it was rebuilt by Brandelis de Gontaud-Biron, aided by his brother Armand de Contaud, bishop of Sarlat. The works took place from 1510 to 1515. Its interior decoration is largely preserved: staircases, numerous fireplaces, frescoes... It is one of the most famous Renaissance castles of the Périgord. A vast razed barbican commands the approach to the fortress, access to which is made by a drawbridge and a small castle, in front of a curtain crowned by a machicolated parapet. The interior courtyard is situated in the middle of asymmetrical pavilions, interpenetrated by round towers and staircase turrets. The tower known as that of Henri IV retains painted decoration. A circular dovecote of the 18th century is situated below the castle.
