Historique
Rotonde pour locomotives à vapeur, conçue par l'ingénieur Bernard Laffaille en collaboration avec le service des bâtiments de la SNCF et construite par l'entreprise H. Gaillard. Remplaçant la rotonde démolie pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, le bâtiment annulaire de 107 mètres de diamètre est couvert d'un voile mince en béton armé supporté par trois séries concentriques de poteaux. La façade est constituée d'éléments standards préfabriqués. Construite en un temps record, d'avril à décembre 1946, la rotonde d'Avignon a servi de prototype pour dix-huit remises ferroviaires construites pour la SNCF de 1946 à 1952.

History
Roundhouse for steam locomotives, designed by the engineer Bernard Laffaille in collaboration with the SNCF buildings department and built by the company H. Gaillard. Replacing the roundhouse demolished during the Second World War, the annular building of 107 metres in diameter is covered with a thin reinforced concrete shell supported by three concentric series of posts. The facade is made up of standard prefabricated elements. Built in record time, from April to December 1946, the Avignon roundhouse served as a prototype for eighteen railway sheds built for the SNCF from 1946 to 1952.
