This engineering structure built between 1844 and 1848 on the model of the suspension bridges known as "wire cable" bridges of the Seguin Brothers, was improved according to technical innovations due to engineer Ferdinand Arnodin, from 1882 onwards. It was restored and strengthened between 1887 and 1892, after being damaged by floods in 1872, 1881 and 1886. This structure belongs to the first generation of metal bridges, improving the Anglo-Saxon formula by substituting chain suspenders with wire cable suspenders.
