L'hôtel est situé dans le quartier Villeneuve, à l'est de la ville, qui présente un plan d'urbanisme où les rues sont droites et se coupent à angle droit. Après acquisition d'une place à bâtir en 1684, Sextius d'Arlatan de Montaud, conseiller du roi à la cour du Parlement de Provence, fait construire son hôtel à partir de 1685 ; en 1687, le clos et le couvert sont terminés ; en 1691, décoration de la maison. Dans le courant du 18e siècle, l'hôtel est embelli à plusieurs reprises : certains salons sont ornés de décors en gypserie pouvant dater de 1730-1735 ; d'autres décors sont plus tardifs, vers 1760, de style Louis XV. Les bâtiments des communs -d'une superficie plus importante que celle de l'hôtel proprement dit- forment un U sur une cour intérieure ; la plus grande partie de ces communs date de la seconde moitié du 17e siècle ; puis dans la seconde moitié du 18e siècle, surélévation de la partie centrale des communs. La porte monumentale a été transférée au musée de Lyon.

History
The hotel is situated in the Villeneuve district, to the east of the town, which presents an urban plan where the streets are straight and intersect at right angles. After acquiring a building plot in 1684, Sextius d'Arlatan de Montaud, counsellor of the king at the court of the Parlement of Provence, has his hotel built from 1685 onwards; in 1687, the enclosure and roof are completed; in 1691, decoration of the house. In the course of the 18th century, the hotel is embellished several times: certain rooms are decorated with gypsum work decoration that may date from 1730-1735; other decorations are later, around 1760, in Louis XV style. The outbuildings - of a larger area than the hotel proper - form a U around an interior courtyard; the greater part of these outbuildings dates from the second half of the 17th century; then in the second half of the 18th century, the central part of the outbuildings is raised. The monumental gate was transferred to the museum of Lyon.
