History
The citadel benefits from the heritage of medieval urban fortification and the architectural innovations of early 17th-century military engineering. It represents the archetype of the bastioned fortification of the pre-Vauban period. The principal present dispositions are dated to the very beginning of the 17th century and remain authentic. The additions of the 19th century have preserved the general character of the site. The citadel, conceived on four levels to the south and three to the north, strikes one by its verticality, particularly in this type of plan.
