History

From the 11th century, the château defended the frontier with Normandy. The present building dates from the beginning of the 16th century and the 18th century, and overlooks a terraced garden. Essentially a market garden until the middle of the 18th century, the garden, enclosed by walls, is first "English", with water features and groves. It was in 1928 that it took on its present form, with Italian leanings. The intermediate terrace is drawn in imitation of a water parterre of the villa Gamberaia, near Florence. The upper terrace is inspired by a painting by Paul Brill (1554-1626) preserved at the villa Artena, near Rome. In front of the residence, the upper terrace presents an alignment from the end of the Old Regime, leading to an open view over the valley. A radiating motif of hedges, a grid structure with topiary evoking a chess game, attest to the evolution, in the 1980s, of the layout designed in the interwar period. A greenhouse, a footbath, and an orchard complete the ensemble. The outbuildings date in part from the 17th century.
