Vankila on rakennettu punatiilestä 1920-1930-luvulla linnoitusmaisesti keskellä soita kohoavalle kukkulalle. Hallintorakennuksen on suunnitellut Elina Vessman.

Varsinaisen laitoksen ulkopuolella on erillisiä vankilaan liittyviä tuotantorakennuksia sekä yhtenäisesti toteutettu henkilökunnan asuinalue säännöllisenä ryhmänä. Lappeenrantaan johtavan tien varrella on entinen koulu sekä Jurvasaaressa neljä vankilan työntekijöiden asuinrakennusta. Elina Vessmanin suunnittelema vankilanjohtajan asunto on funktionalistinen.

Suosta kuivattuja, hyvin laajoja peltoaukeita halkovat pitkät viivasuorat koivukujat.

Konnunsuo on osa valtakunnallisesti arvokasta maisema-aluetta Konnunsuo-Joutsenon kirkonkylä.

Konnunsuo is one of the so-called agricultural prisons established at the beginning of the 20th century, whose purpose was to clear and drain bogs for farmland using prison labour. The Konnunsuo prison building group and the open fields surrounding it form an impressive landscape.

The prison was built of red brick in the 1920s and 1930s, in a fortress-like manner, on a hill rising in the middle of the bogs. The cell, service and administrative buildings, together with the church and the school building, form a separate enclosed group. To the right of the basilica-type church are the hospital facilities, and to the left the school facilities. The cell building, the church and the prison's large cattle building were designed by Uno Sjöholm. The administrative building was designed by Elina Vessman.

Outside the actual institution are separate production buildings related to the prison, as well as a uniformly built staff housing area laid out in a regular group. Along the road leading to Lappeenranta stands the former school, and on Jurvasaari there are four residential buildings for prison employees. The residence of the prison governor, designed by Elina Vessman, is functionalist.

Long, ruler-straight birch avenues cross the very large open fields that have been drained from the bog.

Konnunsuo is part of the Konnunsuo-Joutsenon kirkonkylä, a landscape area of national significance.

The use of prisoners in agricultural work was a new phenomenon in the prison administration of the early 20th century. Prison colonies operating as agricultural and bog prisons were an efficient solution to the growing number of prisoners. The aim was also to drain bogs for farmland and settlement. Drainage work at Konnunsuo began in 1917 and was continued with the labour of Red prisoners. In 1919 the prison colony was converted into an auxiliary prison, whose activities were based on bog clearing and agriculture.

Construction of the present prison buildings began in 1921, and they were completed by the early 1930s. In addition, at a distance from the prison centre, a machine workshop, a brick factory and a sawmill were built, among others.
