The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Kaksikerroksista päärakennusta on empireajalle tyypillisesti laajennettu yksikerroksisilla siipiosilla 1824. Puiston 8-kulmainen kellotorni on 1830-luvulta.

A. Tollet) ja Mäkelä rakennettiin 1922 esimiesten asunnoiksi.

Alueen historiallinen sosiaalinen rakenne on edelleen nähtävissä rakennuskannassa erilaisina alueina. Ylin johto on perinteisesti sijoittunut lähelle tehdasta, joen varteen. Työväenasuinalueet on sijoitettu tehtaasta kauemmaksi ja toimihenkilöille tarkoitetut lähemmäksi tai kuten Lohiluoma, Pyhäjärven rantaan.

Kauttuan ruukin lähistöllä olevan Luistarin muinaisjäännösalueen löydöt viittaavat esihistorialliseen raudanvalmistukseen. Keskiaikainen kylätontti alueen luoteisosassa viestii pitkästä yhtäjaksoisesta asumisesta Kauttualla.

Kauttuan ruukin perusti vapaaherra Lorenz Creutz nuorempi Yläneen kartanon maille Kauttuankosken rannalle Euraan vuonna 1689. Creutzien jälkeen omistajaksi tuli ensin Timm -suku, jonka hallussa Kauttuan ruukki oli 1700 - 1873, josta 1800-luku oli vävynä taloon tulleen Falck -suvun aikaa. Jälkimmäisten aikana rakennettiin pääosa kartanon ja ruukin säilyneistä asuinrakennuksista, päärakennus, kellotorni, Sepänkadun rakennukset ja puisto.

Uusi tärkeä teollisuushistoriallinen vaihe Kauttuan historiassa alkoi 1906, kun 1873 omistajaksi tulleen Antti Ahlströmin perustama yhtiö rakensi vanhan rautaruukin tuntumaan paperitehtaan. Tehtaan suunnitteli arkkitehtitoimisto Fagerholm ja Nordman. Rautabetonirakenteet suunniteltiin Saksassa. Puuhiomo ja ruskeaa paperia valmistava tehdas aloittivat toimintansa 1907, ja samalla päättyi raudan valmistus. Paperitehtaan alkuvaiheen asuinalueita olivat Keittiömäki, Juudaanmaa ja Mikolanmäki. Paperitehdasta on laajennettu jokaisella vuosikymmenellä aina nykypäiviin saakka.

A-talot.

The Kauttua industrial area is a historically and architecturally valuable and diverse ensemble, formed by an old ironworks environment and 20th-century modern industrial construction, which remains in industrial use.

The oldest layers of settlement history, predating the ironworks manor, are found in the northwest, where along the river there are several Stone Age and Iron Age fixed ancient monuments, as well as the deserted village site of Kauttua village.

The built core of the area consists of the ironworks manor with its park and outbuildings, the smiths' houses in a linear row along Sepäntie, which follows the contours of the riverside slope, and the residential buildings Vanharivi and Pitkärivi. The old charcoal shed from the 1870s and the sawmill building from the early 20th century have partly survived from the ironworks phase that preceded the present paper mill. The lower forges, the bundle hammer forge and the mills at the rapids, built in the 17th and 18th centuries, have been demolished.

The main building of Kauttua ironworks was completed in 1802, and in its volume, the articulation of its facades and its details it is typical of "anonymous" neoclassicism. Stylistically, the building designed by Gabriel Bonsdorff belongs to the same group as the main buildings of Anjala manor and the Kirkniemi and Hakoinen manors. The two-storey main building was extended with single-storey wing sections in 1824, as was typical of the Empire period. The eight-sided bell tower in the park dates from the 1830s.

The first phase of the paper mill was built on the riverbank opposite the manor in 1906. Several residential buildings for paper mill managers and workers are associated with the mill. Villa Bertel Ahlström, intended for the local manager, was designed by Jarl Eklund and completed in 1911. The park associated with the building was designed by Paul Ollsson, although it was not implemented in its entirety. Mäntylä (arch. A. Tollet) and Mäkelä, built nearby, were built in 1922 as residences for supervisors.

On the riverbank there is also Rantala, built as a residential and office building from the 1870s, and the studio building for Thura Borg, designed by Birger Federley and completed in 1902, whose National Romantic exterior was simplified in 1937.

The expansion of the paper mill's operations was reflected in the 1930s and 1940s in new residential areas for workers and white-collar employees. One of the planners was Alvar Aalto, whose plans realised included, among others, the terrace house, small houses in Varkaudenmäki, the residential building for female office staff, Tipula (now Villa Aalto), and the residence of the chief engineer at Lohiluoma. On the riverbank there is also the sauna and laundry building for Ahlström staff, designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto.

Lohiluoma, on the shore of Pyhäjärvi, forms a separate residential area for white-collar employees. Detached houses were completed there in the 1940s and terraced houses in the 1960s.

Alvar Aalto's terrace house, an apartment block stepping down the slope of the esker in terraces, is a high-quality example of modern functionalism and experimental housing architecture. It also belongs to the selection of Finnish modern architectural masterpieces approved by the international DOCOMOMO organisation. The building is sited in the slope so that each apartment has its own entrance directly from the landscape, and the roof of the lower apartment forms the roof terrace of the upper one. The thin railings of the terraces and the wooden roof structures bring lightness to the unarticulated, compact facades of the white-rendered brick building with its concrete frame.

The company's construction in the 1960s and 1970s was most evident in the expansion of the factories. The first apartment blocks, designed by Pentti Ahola and completed on the northern edge of the area in the 1970s, represent housing production. Another new building type was the terraced house, built mainly in the 1960s in the Lohiluoma white-collar area. A water tower also belongs to this construction phase.

The Kauttua manor and industrial environment is characterised by a diverse building stock, designed by several architects and master builders. The resulting interesting and layered ensemble tells of the aims of industrial community building from the 18th century to the late 20th century.

The historical social structure of the area is still visible in the building stock as distinct zones. The top management has traditionally been located close to the factory, on the riverbank. Workers' housing areas have been placed further from the factory, and white-collar housing closer to it or, as in Lohiluoma, on the shore of Pyhäjärvi.

The finds at the Luistari ancient monument area near the Kauttua ironworks point to prehistoric iron production. The medieval village site in the northwest of the area bears witness to long, continuous settlement at Kauttua.

The Kauttua ironworks was founded by Baron Lorenz Creutz the Younger on the lands of Yläne manor, on the shore of Kauttuankoski rapids in Eura, in 1689. After the Creutz family, ownership passed first to the Timm family, in whose possession the Kauttua ironworks was from 1700 to 1873. The 19th century was the era of the Falck family, who came to the estate through a son-in-law. During the Falck family's time, most of the surviving residential buildings of the manor and ironworks were built: the main building, the bell tower, the buildings on Sepänkatu, and the park.

A new important industrial-historical phase in the history of Kauttua began in 1906, when a company founded by Antti Ahlström, who had become owner in 1873, built a paper mill in the vicinity of the old iron works. The mill was designed by the architectural office Fagerholm and Nordman. The reinforced concrete structures were designed in Germany. The groundwood mill and the factory producing brown paper began operations in 1907, and at the same time iron production ended. The early residential areas of the paper mill were Keittiömäki, Juudaanmaa and Mikolanmäki. The paper mill has been extended in every decade up to the present day. Antti Ahlström's connections also include Lankoski village in Merikarvia and the Noormarkku ironworks area in Noormarkku.

After the paper mill was completed, a railway and a railway station were built at Kauttua. Operations expanded in 1937 with a paper converting factory, Euran paperi, whose first building phase was completed on the east side of the railway in 1942. The expansion of operations increased residential construction. In the 1940s, among others, the Omakotialue and Kiiskinmäki workers' housing areas arose, as did the Varkaudenmäki and Lohiluoma residential areas for white-collar employees, as well as numerous smaller residential areas intended for factory workers, clerks and foremen.

Alvar Aalto sketched the building stock of Kauttua for Ahlström in 1937-1944. At the same time, he had under design for the same owner Villa Mairea, to be built in the Noormarkku ironworks landscape. Numerous plan proposals for Kauttua also included a scheme in which several terrace houses were placed in a fan-like arrangement following the contour lines on steep terrain. The outbreak of war left the larger plans and construction projects on paper. Only one of the concrete and brick terrace houses was completed, after which, owing to war and material shortages, it became necessary to switch to a lighter timber structure. Of Alvar Aalto's plans, apart from the one terrace house, the following were realised: Tipula, built for female office staff; the Lohiluoma engineer's house; the riverside sauna and laundry building; and, as a larger ensemble, the factory houses manufactured by the Varkaus factory in Varkaudenmäki, known as the so-called A-houses.

Kauttua is one of the country's ironworks where industrial activity continues after the original iron production ceased. Today the Kauttua factories are part of international companies, and therefore the great and comprehensive influence of the factory and its local management on the building of the environment has ended. The central historical building stock is still company property, but some of it has been sold to private owners. This has brought infill construction and changes to the building stock to the area.
