The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Huomattavia yksittäisiä rakennuksia ovat saha, A. Ahlström Oy:n pääkonttori (E. Fabritius 1915), Antti Ahlströmin 1877-1881 rakennuttama Isotalo (Ewert Lagerspetz), 1901 arkkitehti G.-A. Rakennus on sijoitettu metsäiseen rinteeseen Noormarkun ruukinalueen laidalle.

Makkarakosken rannalla sijaitsevan kaksikerroksisen saharakennuksen kantavat rakenteet on yhdistetty taidokkain hirsiliitoksin. Sahasalin täydellisenä säilynyt varustus on historiallisesti erittäin arvokas. Vanhempi kehäsahapari on asennettu 1882.

Ruukin alueen puistolle on antanut muodon Bengt Schalin 1910-luvulla. Havulinnaan liittyvän terassoidun puiston on suunnitellut Paul Olsson.

Kirkko on rakennettu A. Ahlström osakeyhtiön lahjoittamilla varoilla yhtiön perustajan Antti Ahlströmin syntymän 100-vuotismuistojuhlan kunniaksi. 1927 tehtyyn lahjoitukseen sisältyivät myös arkkitehti Armas Lindgrenin laatimat piirustukset. Keskiaikaisen satakuntalaisen harmaakivikirkon yleishahmosta lähtökohtansa saanut kirkko valmistui Lindgrenin kuoleman jälkeen 1933. Kirkkosalin tynnyriholvissa ovat poikittaiset tukikaaret näkyvissä. Pohjoispuolella on pieni seurakuntasali. Kirkkosalin alkuperäistä runsasta kuvataiteellista koristelua täydentää Lennart Segerstrålen alttariseinälle 1957 maalaama fresko.

Sipulikupolilla varustettu lounaissuomalaista tapulityyppiä edustava kaksikerroksinen kellotapuli on rakennettu 1757 ja sijaitsee hautausmaa-alueen kaakkoiskulmassa. Pohjoisosassa olevalla Ahlström-suvun hauta-alueella on taiteellisesti korkeatasoisia hautamuistomerkkejä.

Sahan suunnitteli oletettavasti valtionagronomi Henry Gibson.

Noormarkun vesisahan teollinen toiminta päättyi 1910-luvulla, jonka jälkeen sahausta harjoitettiin kotitarveluonteisena aina 1950-luvulle saakka. Saha laitteistoineen on nykyisin Ahlström-yhtiön sisäisenä museona.

Pienimutoiseksi muuttunut raudanjalostus päättyi Noormarkussa 1920. Noormarkku on Ahlström osakeyhtiön keskuspaikka ja samalla yksi maamme merkittävimmistä kulttuurihistoriallisista ympäristöistä. Noormarkku on viimeinen Ruotsin vallan aikana perustettu rautaruukki Suomessa.

The Noormarkku ironworks area is one of the most representative and best-preserved historic iron industry sites in our country. The ensemble consists of the ironworks operations and the buildings associated with Antti Ahlström and the company he founded. The extensive complex, architecturally of high quality in its buildings, comprises industrial premises as well as workers' housing, a church, the ironworks manor and villas, together with the park area associated with them.

The production buildings are located on the rocky banks of the rapids, with the hammer forge on the north bank of the river and the sawmill on the south bank. The ironworks workers' housing forms a regular group to the north-east of the forge. Notable individual buildings include the sawmill, the head office of A. Ahlström Oy (E. Fabritius 1915), Isotalo, commissioned by Antti Ahlström in 1877-1881 (Ewert Lagerspetz), Havulinna, designed by G.-A. Lindberg in 1901, and, above all, Villa Mairea, completed in 1939, which is one of Alvar Aalto's key works and one of the best-known villas of the 20th century. The building is sited on a wooded slope at the edge of the Noormarkku ironworks area. Villa Mairea belongs to the selection of masterpieces of Finnish modern architecture approved by the international DOCOMOMO organisation. Other cultural environment sites of national significance associated with Antti Ahlström are the village of Lankoski in Merikarvia, the Pihlava sawmill in Pori, and the Kauttua ironworks and paper mill community in Eura.

The load-bearing structures of the two-storey sawmill building, located on the bank of Makkarakoski, are joined with masterly log joints. Alongside root-stump supports, log construction and board cladding, multi-pane windows and red ochre painting are traditional features of sawmill construction. The completely preserved equipment of the sawmill hall is of exceptional historical value. The older pair of frame saws was installed in 1882. The power transmission equipment on the ground floor has also survived. Because of its industrial history, building methods, technical equipment and setting, the Noormarkku sawmill building is an industrial monument of international significance. Moreover, among the large water-powered sawmills, only the Strömfors ironworks sawmill at Ruotsinpyhtää has survived in Finland.

The park of the ironworks area was given its form by Bengt Schalin in the 1910s. The terraced park associated with Havulinna was designed by Paul Olsson. The official housing on Lassilantie and Piilitie was designed by Valter and Ivar Thomé in 1915, and the workers' housing at Olininmäki dates from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The church was built with funds donated by A. Ahlström Osakeyhtiö, in honour of the centenary celebration of the birth of Antti Ahlström, the company's founder. The 1927 donation also included drawings prepared by the architect Armas Lindgren. The church, which took its general character from the medieval grey stone churches of Satakunta, was completed in 1933, after Lindgren's death. The barrel vault of the nave shows the transverse supporting arches. There is a small parish hall on the north side. The original rich artistic decoration of the nave is complemented by a fresco on the altar wall, painted by Lennart Segerstråle in 1957.

The two-storey bell tower, topped with an onion dome and representing the south-western Finnish bell tower type, was built in 1757 and stands at the south-eastern corner of the cemetery area. The Ahlström family burial area in the northern part of the cemetery contains artistically high-quality grave monuments.

The parsonage on the other side of Vanha Vaasantie was completed in 1877 and now serves as the parish administration building.

In the 1560s there were 13 farms in total in the villages of Noormarkku (Norrmark) and Finpyy (Finby), located along the river.

The Noormarkku manor (Herrgård) is first mentioned in 1402. Industrial production began in 1747, when the Herrgård estate was granted permission to establish a sawmill on the shore of the then Sahakoski (Vanhansahankoski) rapids. A second sawmill was established at Makkarakoski in 1753. Operations at Sahakoski ended in 1873.

Lieutenant Colonel, later Governor of Vaasa Province, Baron Carl Constantin de Carnall received a privilege in 1806 to build a tilt hammer and furnace on the western shore of Makkarakoski in Ulvila, on the grounds of the Herrgård ratsutila.

Noormarkku was bought in 1870 by businessman Antti Ahlström, who immediately began to renew and expand the ironworks and sawmill operations. The Makkarakoski sawmill, built and dammed by the previous owner, burned down in January 1875. Antti Ahlström built the present sawmill that same year, using building material from Sahakoski, which had closed in 1873. A water wheel was installed as the power source of the new sawmill, even though the timing coincided with the emerging era of steam sawmills. The sawmill was presumably designed by state agronomist Henry Gibson.

Industrial operation of the Noormarkku water sawmill ended in the 1910s, after which sawing continued on a domestic-needs basis right up to the 1950s. The sawmill, together with its equipment, is today an internal museum of the Ahlström company.

Iron processing, which had become small-scale, ended in Noormarkku in 1920. Noormarkku is the headquarters of Ahlström osakeyhtiö and at the same time one of the most significant cultural-historical environments in our country. Noormarkku is the last ironworks established in Finland during Swedish rule.
