Kuvaus
Alavuden kirkko on Pohjanmaan kirkkoarkkitehtuurissa harvinainen 1900-luvun alussa rakennettu art nouveau -tyyliä edustava kivikirkko. Alavuden ensimmäisen kirkon paikalla sijaitseva Muistojen kappelin alue on ainutlaatuinen neljän sodan sankarivainajien hautausmaa.
Arkkitehti Kauno S. Kallion suunnittelema, vuonna 1914 valmistunut Alavuden kirkko on muodoltaan pitkäkirkko. Rapattua tiilikirkkoa kattaa korkea katto, jonka harjalla on kapea ja korkea torni. Aumakaton sekä pitkien sivujen klassismia lähestyvät kaaripäätyaiheet antavat rakennukselle persoonallisen ilmeen. Kolmilaivaisen kirkon sakaristo on runkohuonetta matalampi.
Kirkossa on lehterit kolmella sivulla. Suurikokoinen pyöreä lasimaalaus on Kauno S. Kallion suunnittelema.
Aiempaan kirkkoon kuulunut erillinen, puinen kellotapuli on valmistunut 1825 rakennusmestari Juha Köhlströmin johdolla. Kolmesta kirkonkellosta kaksi on peräisin Alavuden 1746 rakennetusta kirkosta. Kirkon läheisyydessä on myös pitäjänmakasiini, jossa toimii Sotavanhuksen museo.
Muistojen kappelin alue sijaitsee muutama sataa metriä nykyisestä kirkkopihasta etelään, samalla paikalla missä sijaitsivat Alavuden ensimmäinen kirkko vuodelta 1746 ja sitä edeltänyt saarnahuone vuodelta 1674. Kaariportista sisään tultaessa on suoraan edessä korkea kiviobeliski ja siitä oikealle rautapatsas, molemmat Suomen sodan (1808-1809) muistomerkkejä. Portista vasemmalle on Eino Schroderuksen vuoden 1918 sodan muistomerkiksi ja haudaksi suunnittelemat soihtupylväät. Alueen pohjoisosassa kohoaa lahjoitusten turvin rakennettu, 1955 valmistunut pieni kappeli ja sen yhteydessä 1939-1944 sotien sankarihautausmaa. Muistojen kappelin on suunnitellut arkkitehti Eino Schroderus ja sen ikkunan neljä metriä korkean lasimaalauksen taiteilija Bruno Tuukkanen.
Historia
Alavudesta tuli virallisesti Ilmajoen kappeliseurakunta 1701; seurakunta sai ensimmäisen oman papin 1707.
Nykyisen kirkon edeltäjä valmistui 1825, kirkkoa suunniteltaessa hyödynnettiin paljolti Jacob Rijfin suunnitteleman Vimpelin kirkon piirustuksia. Kirkko paloi pääsiäisaamuna 1912. Sen tilalle rakennettiin Kauno S. Kallion suunnittelema kivikirkko 1913-1914. Kirkkoa korjattiin 1957 ja 1975.

Description
Alavus Church is a rare example of an art nouveau style stone church built in the early 20th century, in Ostrobothnian church architecture. The Memorial Chapel area, located on the site of Alavus's first church, is a unique cemetery for the war heroes of four wars.
Designed by architect Kauno S. Kallio and completed in 1914, Alavus Church is a long church. The rendered brick church is covered by a high roof, with a narrow, tall tower on the ridge. The hipped roof and the arched gable motifs on the long sides, which approach classicism, give the building a distinctive appearance. The three-aisled church's sacristy is lower than the nave.
The church has galleries on three sides. Three candelabra chandeliers in the central aisle were saved from fire from the previous church. The altarpiece depicts the Taking Down from the Cross and was painted by the artist Oskari Paatela. The large round stained glass window was designed by Kauno S. Kallio.
A separate wooden bell tower belonging to the earlier church was completed in 1825 under the direction of master builder Juha Köhlström. Two of the three church bells come from the church built in Alavus in 1746. Near the church is also a parish storehouse, which houses the Sotavanhus museum.
The Memorial Chapel area is located a few hundred metres south of the current church yard, on the same site where Alavus's first church from 1746 and the preaching house that preceded it from 1674 stood. On entering through the arched gate, a tall stone obelisk stands directly ahead, and to the right of it an iron statue, both memorials to the Finnish War (1808-1809). To the left of the gate are the torch pillars designed by Eino Schroderus as the memorial and grave for the 1918 war. In the northern part of the area rises a small chapel completed in 1955, built with donations, and in connection with it the war heroes' cemetery for the 1939-1944 wars. The Memorial Chapel was designed by architect Eino Schroderus, and the four-metre-high stained glass window in its window was made by artist Bruno Tuukkanen.
History
Alavus officially became a chapel parish of Ilmajoki in 1701; the parish received its first own priest in 1707. The priest fled the war in 1714, and it was until 1721 before a successor was found for him. By decision of King Kustaa IV Aadolf in 1798, Kuortane became the mother parish of a new parish and Alavus became its chapel. Alavus was raised to mother parish in 1835 and Kuortane became its chapel. Kuortane became an independent parish in 1875.
The predecessor of the present church was completed in 1825; in planning the church, the drawings of the Vimpeli church designed by Jacob Rijf were largely used. The church burned down on Easter morning 1912. In its place a stone church designed by Kauno S. Kallio was built in 1913-1914. The church was repaired in 1957 and 1975.
