The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Pielisjärven rannalla sijaitseva Nurmeksen rautatieasema on rakennuskannaltaan monipuolinen ja yhtenäinen. Aseman rakennukset on rakennettu kahdessa vaiheessa.

Karjalan rata Joensuuhun valmistui 1894. Toivomus rautatien ulottamisesta Nurmekseen esitettiin ensi kerran valtiopäiväanomuksessa 1887. Kiista ratalinjauksesta jatkui aina 1900-luvun alkuun, ja vasta vuoden 1906 valtiopäivillä saatiin aikaan päätös radan vetämisestä Joensuusta Pielisen itäpuolta Nurmekseen. Lieksan ja Nurmeksen välinen rataosuus rakennettiin 1909-1911. Rautatie merkitsi yhteyttä suoraan pääkaupunkiin; viljan ja puutavaran kuljetus helpottui ja tuotti vaurautta seudulle.

Radan jatkamista Pohjanlahdelle, Oulujokilaakson halki Ouluun, ryhdyttiin suunnittelemaan 1912. Aiemmin ratalinjaus oli aiottu Kemiin ja Tornioon. Esivalmisteluja tehtiin talvella 1918-1919, mutta työt jatkuivat vasta 1926 ja rata Kontiomäkeen valmistui 1929.

The Nurmes railway station, located on the shore of Pielisjärvi, is varied and uniform in its building stock. The station buildings were constructed in two phases.

The station building, the station master's house, the goods storehouse and engine shed, and the seven-family residential barracks represent Jugend-influenced railway architecture. They were completed to the plans of VR architect Thure Hellström in 1910, when traffic between Joensuu and Nurmes began. The station's double guardhouse and the Kirkkokatu residential barracks date from 1927, when an extension line from Nurmes to Kontiomäki opened.

The Karelian railway (Karjalan rata) to Joensuu was completed in 1894. A proposal to extend the railway to Nurmes was first put forward in a parliamentary petition in 1887. The dispute over the route continued into the early 20th century, and it was not until the 1906 Diet that a decision was reached to build the line from Joensuu to Nurmes on the eastern side of Pielinen. The section between Lieksa and Nurmes was built in 1909-1911. The railway meant a direct connection to the capital; the transport of grain and timber became easier and brought prosperity to the region.

Plans to extend the line to the Gulf of Bothnia, through the Oulujoki valley to Oulu, were begun in 1912. Earlier, the line had been intended to run to Kemi and Tornio. Preparatory work was carried out in the winter of 1918-1919, but work did not resume until 1926, and the line to Kontiomäki was completed in 1929.
