Kuvaus
Kustavin kirkkoympäristö on 1700-luvulla perustetun kappeliseurakunnan pienimuotoinen ja hyvin säilynyt keskus. Kokonaisuuden muodostavat kappeliseurakunnan perustamisen aikaan 1700-luvulla rakennettu lounaissuomalainen pitkäkirkko, kirkon läheisyydessä sijaitseva pappila sekä näiden välillä kulkeva vanha maantie, Suuri postitie.
Kustavin puukirkko sijaitsee kirkonkylän etelälaidalla. Muodoltaan se on pitkäkirkko, johon liittyvät runkohuonetta matalammat sakarat. Satulakattoinen kirkko on katettu paanuilla. Pieni sakaristo on itäsakaran pohjoissivulla. Kirkkosalia kattaa tynnyriholvi. Saarnatuoli on 1640-luvulta.
Sankarihaudalla on Jussi Vikaisen suunnittelema patsas.
Kustavilaissyntyisen kirjailija Volter Kilven (1874-1939) romaani Alastalon salissa alkaa kuvauksella Kustavin kirkkomaalta. Kustavilla on merkittävä rooli myös Kilven Saaristo-sarjan muissa osissa.
Historia
Kappeliseurakunta sai nimekseen Gustaf, Kustavi kuningas Kustaa III:n kunniaksi. Nykyinen kirkko rakennettiin uudelle paikalle Kivimaalle 1783 J. Höckertin johdolla käyttämällä hyväksi Kunnaraisten vanhan kappelikirkon hirsirunkoa. Kirkkoa korotettiin ja siihen lisättiin sivusakarat. Myös tapuli siirrettiin nykyiselle paikalleen Kunnaraisista 1793. Kirkkosalia uusittiin 1876-1879 lääninarkkitehti C.J. von Heidekenin ja 1928 lääninarkkitehti G. Wahlroosin suunnitelmin. Kirkkorakennusta korjattiin ulkoa 1988. Kirkko sijaitsi alun perin kirkkomaan pohjoislaidassa.
Vanhan kappalaisenpappilan eli Pietilän pihapiiriin rakennettiin 1880-luvun alussa uusi pappila talousrakennuksineen.

Description
The church environment of Kustavi is a small and very well preserved centre of a chapel parish founded in the 18th century. The ensemble consists of a southwest Finnish pitkäkirkko built at the time the chapel parish was established in the 18th century, the parsonage located near the church, and the old highway Suuri postitie that runs between them.
The wooden church of Kustavi stands on the southern edge of the church village. It is a pitkäkirkko, to which lower transepts are attached. The saddle-roofed church is covered with shingles. There is a low vestibule building at the western gable end of the church, and a corresponding building section is also at the gable end of the southern side annex. A small sacristy is on the north side of the east transept. The church hall is covered by a barrel vault. Of the church's fixed interior, the altarpiece and the galleries are from the 19th century. The pulpit is from the 1640s. The furnishings include votive ships donated to the church by people from the archipelago parishes.
The separate bell tower, clad with shingles, is possibly from the 17th century and is of the same type as the bell tower at Lokalahti. The old cemetery surrounds the church and the bell tower. The church's granary storehouse is at the west gate, and a dissecting room dating from 1929 is on the north edge of the churchyard. The war heroes' grave has a statue designed by Jussi Vikainen.
Suuri postitie, which is also selected as a separate site, runs past the churchyard, which is enclosed by a stone wall. The old road alignment curves towards the parsonage, which was built in the early 1880s and still serves as the residence of the rector, and which is located on the east side of the church. The yard area includes a väentupa located opposite the parsonage building, as well as a stone cowshed built in 1939 on the service yard. The old cultivated clearing lies to the south of the church and the parsonage.
The novel Alastalon salissa by the Kustavi-born writer Volter Kilpi (1874-1939) begins with a description of the Kustavi churchyard. Kustavi also plays a significant role in the other parts of Kilpi's Saaristo-sarja series.
History
The oldest of the churches of Kustavi was in Vartsala, which was mentioned in 1554 as a chapel of Taivassalo. The chapel church of Vartsala and that of Kunnaraiset, founded in 1675, were merged in 1783 into one chapel. The chapel parish was given the name Gustaf, Kustavi in honour of King Kustaa III. The present church was built on a new site at Kivimaa in 1783 under the direction of J. Höckert, using the log frame of the old chapel church of Kunnaraiset. The church was raised and side wings were added. The bell tower was also moved from Kunnaraiset to its present site in 1793. The nave was renovated in 1876-1879 to plans by lääninarkkitehti C.J. von Heideken, and in 1928 to plans by lääninarkkitehti G. Wahlroos. The church building was repaired externally in 1988. The church originally stood on the north side of the churchyard. The cemetery was enlarged in the 1850s and in 1922.
Kustavi was a chapel of Taivassalo until 1865, when it was separated as an independent parish. In the early 1880s a new parsonage with outbuildings was built in the yard of the old chaplain's parsonage, i.e. Pietilä.
