The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Ylihärmän puukirkko on kuuluisan pohjalaisen Hakolan kirkonrakentajasuvun edustajan Kaapo Hakolan johdolla rakennettu, sekä sisä- että ulkonurkista viistetty pohjalainen 1700-luvun loppupuolen ristikirkko, joka muodostaa pappilan kanssa hyvin säilyneen kirkkoympäristön.

Ylihärmän kirkko on muodoltaan 24-kulmainen ristikirkko, jonka keskeltä kohoaa sipulipäätteinen kattoratsastaja. Korkea aumakatto on paanutettu. Ikkunat ovat segmenttikaariset. Kirkon kiinteä sisustus on uudistettu 1938 Ilmari Launiksen suunnitteleman korjauksen yhteydessä.

Intendentinkonttorin suunnittelema tapuli vuodelta 1828 on tehty Oravaisista kotoisin olleen rakennusmestari Olof Häggblomin johdolla. Hän on vastannut tapulin rakentamisesta myös 1830 Kuortaneella, missä on nähtävissä Ylihärmän tapulista omaksuttuja aiheita.

Kirkkoa ja tapulia ympäröi vanha hautausmaa. Sankarihautausmaa on J.S. Sirénin suunnittelema.

Kirkon eteläpuolella on vanha pappilarakennus ja vanha pitäjänmakasiini, joka on museokäytössä. Ylihärmän pappila on rakennettu 1889 edeltäneen pappilan paikalle.

The Ylihärmä wooden church was built under Kaapo Hakola, a representative of the renowned Ostrobothnian Hakola church-builder family. It is an Ostrobothnian cross church of the late 18th century, chamfered at both the inner and outer corners, which together with the parsonage forms a well-preserved church environment.

The Ylihärmä church is a 24-sided cross church, from the centre of which rises an onion-topped roof turret. The high aumakatto roof is clad in pantiles. The windows are segmental-arched. The church's fixed interior was renovated in 1938 in connection with a restoration designed by Ilmari Launis.

The bell tower of 1828, designed by the Intendentinkonttori, was built under the direction of master builder Olof Häggblom, who came from Oravainen. He was also responsible for building the bell tower at Kuortane in 1830, where motifs adopted from the Ylihärmä bell tower can be seen.

The church and bell tower are surrounded by an old cemetery. The Heroes' Cemetery was designed by J.S. Sirén.

To the south of the church are the old parsonage building and an old parish storehouse, which is in museum use. The Ylihärmä parsonage was built in 1889 on the site of an earlier parsonage. The parsonage is surrounded by a garden, and the yard contains an old aitta. From 1976 the parsonage has served as the parish's office and activity premises.

The area along the riverbanks of Härmä belonged, from the establishment of settlement, to the Kyrö church parish, and later to the Lapua kirkkoherrakunta, which separated from it in 1581. In the 17th century the farms lived from meadow-based, livestock-dominated agriculture and the rising tar burning. Settlement expanded in the 18th century through the splitting of farms and the establishment of new holdings and crofts.

The residents of the Peräkylä and Keskikylä villages of Härmä built their own church in 1785-1787 according to the drawings of Kaapo Hakola. Around the church, the Ylihärmä saarnahuonekunta, subordinate to Lapua, was formed in 1816. The Ylihärmä parish was formed in 1859 from the southern part of the old Härmä parish. The Kauhava chapel parish came from Ylihärmä in 2009.
