Kuvaus
Huovinrinteen ns. korpivaruskunta on karun modernin 1960-luvun kasarmiarkkitehtuurin korkeatasoinen edustaja.
Historia
Jo 1950-luvun alussa oli esillä kysymys uuden varuskunta-alueen rakentamisesta Turussa toimivalle prikaatille. Kilpailun varuskunnan sijoituksesta voitti Säkylän kunta, jossa maaston ja alueen soveltuvuus maavoimien koulutuskeskuksen tarkoituksiin oli hyvä. Lähettyvillä olivat edulliset kunnalliset palvelut, lisäksi Säkylän kunta osallistui myös maa-alueiden hankintaan. Rakennustyöt Säkylän Huovinrinteellä aloitettiin työllisyystöinä marraskuussa 1959. Elokuussa 1963 Porin Prikaatin II pataljoona siirtyi uuteen kasarmiin. Kolme vuotta myöhemmin Porin Prikaati oli kokonaisuudessaan muuttanut Huovinrinteelle. Varusmiesvahvuus on enimmillään noin 2500 henkeä. Varuskunta on Säkylän kunnan suurin työnantaja.
Alueen asemakaavan on laatinut puolustusministeriön arkkitehti Pentti Viljanen. Suunnittelutyötä valvoi ja koordinoi puolustusministeriön rakennusosaston päällikkö Vilho Noko. Arkkitehti Osmo Lappo vastasi varuskunnan keskustan suunnittelusta.

Description
The so-called Huovinrinne korpivaruskunta is a high-quality example of the austere modernist barracks architecture of the 1960s. It is one of the garrisons built far from population centres and designed by architect Osmo Lappo; the others are Vekaranjärvi in Valkeala and Hoikankangas in Kajaani.
The Säkylä garrison is located in southern Satakunta, at Huovinrinne, about five kilometres from the centre of Säkylä. In addition to the actual barracks area, the garrison area comprises a residential area, a local training area and a combat firing range. In terrain, the area is dry pine-dominated heath forest and sand esker.
At Huovinrinne, the central buildings are set on a slope descending towards the sports field. The canteen, sports building and soldiers' home are arranged around a central courtyard. In all buildings, the entrances to the other ranks' quarters open onto the central courtyard, and service traffic to the buildings takes place from the outer edges of the building group. The facades of the central buildings are of sand-lime brick and cast-in-situ concrete. The same materials are also used in the interiors of the buildings. Roofs are generally of unpainted, bare cast concrete, walls of sawn timber battening, floors mainly of granite mosaic or tile, and doors and windows are stained dark.
The buildings around the central square create a strong horizontal, austere yet dignified impression, and thus form a significant architectural ensemble. The central square lies right beside the garrison's main gate and functions as a semi-public, connecting space between the garrison and the civilian world.
History
In the early 1950s, the question of building a new garrison area for the brigade based in Turku was under consideration. In the competition for the garrison's location, Säkylä municipality won, as its terrain and the area's suitability for the purposes of a land forces training centre were good. Favourable municipal services were nearby, and Säkylä municipality also took part in acquiring the land areas. Construction work at Huovinrinne in Säkylä began as employment-relief work in November 1959. In August 1963, the II Battalion of the Porin Prikaati moved into the new barracks. Three years later, the Porin Prikaati had moved in its entirety to Huovinrinne. The maximum conscript strength is about 2500 persons. The garrison is the largest employer in Säkylä municipality.
The planning and construction of the central area of the barracks complex took eight years in total. In practice, the long construction period was due to the fact that the construction work was carried out as state employment-relief work during winter seasons only. The town plan for the area was drawn up by Pentti Viljanen, architect of the Ministry of Defence. Planning work was supervised and coordinated by Vilho Noko, head of the building department of the Ministry of Defence. Architect Osmo Lappo was responsible for the planning of the garrison centre. At the same time as the Huovinrinne garrison centre was being built, Lappo was working on the garrison centre area at Hoikankangas in Kajaani, where he used the same structural and layout solutions.
