Kuvaus
Urjalan kirkonmäki on hyvin säilynyt esimerkki 1800- ja 1900-luvun vaihteen kirkonkylämiljööstä.
Urjalan päätytornillinen 1800-luvun alussa rakennettu ristikirkko on yksityiskohtiaan myöten 1860-luvulla uudistetussa asussa. Sen arkkitehtuuri on ajankohtaansa nähden varhaista puurakentamiseen sovitettua uusgotiikkaa. Tynnyriholvattu kirkkosali on yksinkertainen. Sen erikoisuutena on Honkolan kartanon lahjoittama ruotsalaisen taiteilija J. Sandbergin maalama Kristuksen taivaaseen astumista kuvaava alttaritaulu sekä alttaripöydän kummallakin puolella "luonnollista kokoa" olevat papier machésta tehdyt enkeliveistokset. Korotetussa tornissa on Nuutajärven kartanon 1932 lahjoittama neljälle ilmansuunnalle näkyvä valaistu ja lyöntikoneistoin varustettu aikakello. Kirkon sisutukseen kuuluu muitakin paikkakunnan kartanoiden tekemiä merkittäviä lahjoituksia. Kirkkotarhassa kirkon länsipuolella on Honkolan kartanon Furuhjelm-suvun suuri perhehauta-alue kansallisromanttisine muistomerkkeineen.
Kirkon koillispuolella on Yli-Uotilan pitkä rapattu päärakennus, taidemaalari Aukusti Uotilan syntymäkoti.
Historia
Urjalankylässä sijainneen keskiaikaiseen sakaristoon liittyneen puukirkon osoittauduttua huonokuntoiseksi ja ahtaaksi päätettiin 1800-luvun alussa uuden kirkon rakentamisesta Urjalan seurakunnan silloiseen ja nykyiseen keskustaan Laukeelassa. Kirkon piirustukset laati vihtiläinen kirkonrakentaja Martti Tolpo. Yli-intendentinviraston arkkitehti Fredrik Blom teki sen perusteella uudet piirustukset 1803. Länsitornillinen ristikirkko valmistui 1806. Kirkon nykyinen uusgoottilainen ulkoasu on peräisin lääninarkkitehti C. A. Edelfeltin piirustusten mukaan 1860-luvun lopulla tehdystä uudistuksesta.

Description
The Urjala kirkonmäki is a well-preserved example of a church village milieu from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The cruciform church with a gable-end tower, built in the early 19th century, retains its 1860s renovated form down to its details. Its architecture is, for its time, an early example of neo-Gothic adapted to timber construction. The barrel-vaulted nave is simple. Its speciality is the altarpiece depicting the Ascension of Christ, painted by the Swedish artist J. Sandberg and donated by Honkola manor, and the papier-mâché angel sculptures "life-size" on either side of the altar table. The raised tower houses an illuminated clock visible from the four points of the compass, with a striking mechanism, donated in 1932 by Nuutajärvi manor. The church's furnishings also include other significant donations made by the manors of the locality. In the churchyard, to the west of the church, is the large family burial area of the Furuhjelm family of Honkola manor, with its National Romantic memorials.
Opposite the church, on the other side of the road, stands the so-called Säätiötalo, surrounded by fine trees, which has served as a bank and municipal office. Next to it are the classicist former savings bank and the old building group of the Pouru farm. To the north-east of the church is the long, rendered main building of Yli-Uotila, the birthplace of the painter Aukusti Uotila.
History
In Urjalankylä, a wooden church that had been attached to a medieval sacristy was found to be in poor condition and too cramped, so at the beginning of the 19th century it was decided to build a new church in Laukeela, the then and present centre of the Urjala parish. The church drawings were prepared by Martti Tolpo, a church builder from Vihti. Based on these, architect Fredrik Blom of the Yli-intendentinvirasto made new drawings in 1803. The cross church with a western tower was completed in 1806. The church's present Neo-Gothic exterior dates from a renovation carried out in the late 1860s according to the drawings of provincial architect C. A. Edelfelt. The next major repair was carried out on the church interior in 1951-54 according to the designs of artist Antti Salmenlinna.
Urjala Savings Bank, Urjalan Säästöpankki, built its bank building diagonally opposite the church in 1897. The building received its present exterior, and the tower that dominates its façade, in the early 1920s according to alteration drawings by architect Paavo Uotila. Urjala municipality was a tenant in the bank building, and the Savings Bank moved in 1923 to a new office building completed next door. The old bank building was sold to the manttaalikunta, and the municipal functions remained there. The building, known as the Kunnallistalo, passed in 1947 into the ownership of the Urjalan talonpoikaissäätiö and was named Säätiötalo.
