Sälgrundin majakka Kaskistensalmen suulla on yksi neljästätoista 1800-luvulla rakennetuista tiilimajakasta. Samantyyppisiä pyöreitä majakkatorneja on säilynyt muun muassa Hailuodon Marjaniemessä ja Luvian Säpissä. Majakka on 27,3 metriä korkea. Majakan alkuperäinen hahmo on muuttunut tornin vahvistukseksi valetun betonikuoren myötä 1935.

Sisätiloissa on tehty huomattavia muutoksia. Vanha kellari on muutettu voima-asemaksi. Pihapiirin ryhmitys on alkuperäisen tilanteen mukainen. Majakan lähettyvillä on lisäksi vanhan tunnusmajakan raunio.

Saaren itärannalla on vanha kalasatama, Laxhamn, jossa on sijainnut myös saaren ensimmäinen luotsitupa.

Kaskisten vesillä harjoitettiin talonpoikaispurjehdusta jo keskiajalla. Kaskisten salmen eteläsuulla olevalla pitkulaisella Sälgrundin saarella oli suojaisa luonnonsatama.

Kaskisten kaupungin porvarit huolehtivat luotsauksen ja merimerkkien järjestämisestä väylille. Sälgrundiin, kaupunkiin johtavan eteläisen väylän varrelle, pystytettiin 1700-luvun alussa riukurakenteinen valoton merimerkki, piira. Sälgrundissa toimi 1760 ilmoituksen mukaan kaksi luotsia.

Siipyyn pohjoispuoliset väylät siirtyivät kruunun hoitoon 1848-1849. Merimerkki korvattiin 1850 uudella kahdeksankulmaisella pookilla ja luotseille rakennettiin kamarin ja keittiön käsittävä asuinrakennus merimerkin lähelle. Vanha merimerkki purettiin, kun saarelle valmistui 1875 arkkitehti Hampus Dahlströmin suunnittelema, Suomen ensimmäinen petrolikäyttöinen majakka. Kaksikerroksinen luotsitupa valmistui 1921. Majakka automatisoitiin 1967.

The Sälgrund lighthouse community reflects fishing as well as pilotage and lighthouse activity on the Ostrobothnian coast, which has continued since the Middle Ages. The Sälgrund lighthouse, built in 1875, is a notable landscape element and an important emblem of the town of Kaskinen and its maritime traditions.

The Sälgrund lighthouse at the mouth of Kaskistensalmi is one of fourteen brick lighthouses built in the 19th century. Similar round lighthouse towers have survived at Marjaniemi on Hailuoto and at Säppi in Luvia, among other places. The lighthouse is 27.3 metres high. The original form of the lighthouse changed in 1935, when the tower was strengthened with a cast concrete shell. The interiors of the building are in their historical state. The lighthouse has been automated, but its original Fresnel lens apparatus is still in place.

The buildings that belonged to the lighthouse keepers have survived. They were built to standard drawings and correspond to the buildings that stood at 19th-century lighthouses. Considerable changes have been made to the interiors. The residential building was converted into a pilot station after the lighthouse was automated, and it was raised by one storey. The old cellar has been converted into a power station. The grouping of the yard corresponds to the original situation. In addition, the ruins of an old marker lighthouse are located in the vicinity of the lighthouse.

On the east shore of the island is an old fishing harbour, Laxhamn, where the island's first pilot house was also located.

Peasant sailing was already practised in the waters of Kaskinen in the Middle Ages. At the southern mouth of the Kaskinen strait lay the elongated island of Sälgrund, which had a sheltered natural harbour.

The burghers of the town of Kaskinen looked after pilotage and the provision of sea marks on the fairways. At the beginning of the 18th century, an unlit pole-built sea mark, a piira, was erected on Sälgrund, along the southern fairway leading to the town. According to a report from 1760, two pilots were active at Sälgrund.

The northern fairways of Siipyy passed under the care of the Crown in 1848-1849. The sea mark was replaced in 1850 by a new octagonal pooki, and a residential building containing a chamber and a kitchen was built for the pilots near the sea mark. The old sea mark was demolished when, in 1875, the island received a lighthouse designed by architect Hampus Dahlström, the first petroleum-powered lighthouse in Finland. A two-storey pilot house was completed in 1921. The lighthouse was automated in 1967. In connection with this, the old residential building of the lighthouse staff was taken into use by the pilots, and the pilot house was demolished.
