The Pohoskylä raitti, which belongs to the village of Suonsalmi, is a significant representative of folk culture thanks to its structure and buildings, which rely on the village road.

The settlement lies on a low ridge rising amid open fields that slope gently down to the edge of the forest, so that the building groups stand closely together along the north–south village road. The open fields on the shore of the village, which arose along a waterway route, are wooded. The placement of outbuildings, including new ones, on both sides of the raitti gives the village its distinctive appearance, creating a cell-like impression. The farms have handsome main buildings, and among the outbuildings there are many ethnographically valuable buildings: riihi, luuvi, vaja and multi-part aitta. The stone fences that once lined the length of the raitti have disappeared. At the junction of the raitti and the public road there is a school building.

In the 1560s, the village of Suonsalmi, which belonged to the Pellosniemi administrative parish, had one farm. As a result of the division of that farm, the farms of Uutela, Vihkola, Tanttu, Jatkola and Rantala formed a landscape complex of their own, known as Pohoskylä, which belonged to the village of Suonsalmi. Vihkola and Tanttu are old farms and served as ruotutaloina during Swedish rule.
