Kuvaus
Varjakan alue on rakennuskannaltaan ja miljööltään parhaiten säilyneitä höyrykauden suursahan ympärille suunniteltuja sahayhdyskuntia.
Varjakansaari on yksi Pohjois-Pohjanmaan rannikolle 1800-luvun lopulla ja 1900-luvun alussa syntyneistä sahayhdyskunnista. Varjakan vanhoista tuotantorakennuksista on jäljellä enää rauniot, mutta sahatyöläisten asuntoja on säilynyt parisenkymmentä. Asuintalot on suunnitellut 1920-luvulla arkkitehti H. Andersin. Osa alueen työväenasunnoista on siirretty Pateniemeen.
Vanhan Varjakan alueella, mantereella, on säilynyt ns. Varjakan kartanon pihapiiri, johon kuuluu kolme puista asuinrakennusta 1900-luvun alusta.
Historia
Saaren halki kulki kapearaiteinen rautatie sahalta telakan satamaan. Mantereelle kuljettiin kapulalossilla.
Osa Varjakan rakennuksista siirrettiin Pateniemen sahan työntekijöiden asunnoiksi. Varjakansaari rakennuksineen toimi Oulu-yhtiöiden työntekijöiden kesäpaikkana vuoteen 1987, jolloin Oulunsalon kunta osti alueen. Rakennuksia korjattiin 1990–luvulla.

Description
The Varjakka area is the best preserved in terms of building stock and setting of the sawmill communities planned around the large steam-era sawmill.
Varjakansaari is one of the sawmill communities that emerged on the coast of North Ostrobothnia at the end of the 19th century and in the early 20th century. Of Varjakka's old production buildings only ruins remain, but about twenty sawmill workers' dwellings have survived. The residential buildings were designed in the 1920s by architect H. Andersin. Some of the area's workers' dwellings have been moved to Pateniemi.
In the old Varjakka area, on the mainland, the so-called Varjakka manor yard has survived, which includes three wooden residential buildings from the early 20th century.
History
On the Varjakka island, the Franzén shipyard operated in the mid-19th century, followed by a repair shipyard. The island also had a steam sawmill from 1900 to 1928, which was at one time the largest in the Nordic countries. It employed up to around 700 workers. The sawmill was built by Varjakka Trävaru Aktiebolaget in 1900. The sawmill burned in 1919, was rebuilt, but its operations ended in 1928 when the main shaft broke. The island also housed the sawmill's head office and a fire station. The sawmill built housing for its workers, a bakery, two shops and a cinema. A narrow-gauge railway ran across the island from the sawmill to the shipyard harbour. The mainland was reached by a capstan ferry (kapulalossi).
Some of the Varjakka buildings were moved to become homes for workers of the Pateniemi sawmill. Varjakansaari with its buildings served as a summer base for employees of the Oulu companies until 1987, when Oulunsalo municipality bought the area. The buildings were repaired in the 1990s.
