The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Kirkonkylää rajaavilla kantatiloilla (Savola, Hakola) on kunnostettuja, pihapiiriin liittyviä perinnerakennuksia. Uusi tielinjaus on sovitettu kyläraitin luonteeseen ja rakenteeseen.

Sumiaisten puukirkko 1880-luvulta seuraa muodoltaan edellistä, 1802 rakennettua kahdeksankulmaista kirkkoa. Keskusosaan liittyy kolmella sivulla lyhyet ristivarret ja neljännellä sivulla matalampi sakaristo. Kirkon ja tapulin ympärillä on vanha kirkkomaa. E. E. Castrenin suunnittelema pappila vuodelta 1862 on vanhan raitin varrella.

Kirkonkylän kulttuurimaisema jatkuu kirkon pohjoispuolella pitkin kyläraittia ja eteläpuolella järvinäkymien kehystämänä pitkin kannastietä.

Sumiaisten rukoushuonekunta muodostettiin Laukaan, Saarijärven, Rautalammin ja Viitasaaren pitäjien osista 1800. Ensimmäinen kirkko rakennettiin 1802. Laukaan kappeliksi Sumiainen muodostettiin 1842 ja itsenäiseksi seurakunnaksi 1896.

Sumiaisten nykyinen kirkko rakennettiin 1888-1889 (Th. Granstedt). Erillinen kellotapuli rakennettiin puusta 1851 Intendentinkonttorin suunnitelmin.

Vesistöjen väliin jäävällä kannaksella sijaitseva nauhamainen kylä rakentui kylätien varrelle, etupäässä Hakolan ja Savolan kantatilojen ja seurakunnan maille.

In Sumiainen, the historical elements of the church village have been well preserved, such as the relationship of building to landscape, the placement of buildings within the yard complex, and the road network and location of the fields.

Historically, the multi-layered and cohesive linear village structure has been cherished. The village centre is formed by the church, the Hytönen commercial property, the old school and the municipal hall built after the wars. Along the village street are also the old parsonage and the Lepänjuuri farm centre. On the main farms bordering the church village (Savola, Hakola) there are restored traditional buildings associated with the farmyards. The new road alignment has been fitted to the character and structure of the village street.

The wooden church of Sumiainen from the 1880s follows the form of the previous church, an octagonal church built in 1802. Short transept arms are attached to the central section on three sides, and a lower sacristy is on the fourth side. The old churchyard surrounds the church and the bell tower. The parsonage designed by E. E. Castrén in 1862 stands along the old village street.

The cultural landscape of the church village continues north of the church along the village street, and south of it along the kannastie road, framed by views of the lakes.

The prayer-house congregation of Sumiainen was formed in 1800 from parts of the parishes of Laukaa, Saarijärvi, Rautalampi and Viitasaari. The first church was built in 1802. Sumiainen was formed as a chapel of Laukaa in 1842 and as an independent parish in 1896.

The present church of Sumiainen was built in 1888–1889 (Th. Granstedt). A separate bell tower was built of wood in 1851 to designs by the Intendentinkonttori.

The linear village, located on the isthmus between the lakes, developed along the village road, mainly on the land of the Hakola and Savola main farms and the parish glebe.
