The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Hankasalmen rautatieasema on rakenteeltaan ja rakennuskannaltaan hyvin rakentamisaikansa asussa säilynyt, pieni 1910-luvun maaseutuasema Vaasan ja Savon radat yhdistävällä poikkiradalla.

Hankasalmen rautatieasema on viidennen luokan asema Jyväskylä-Pieksämäki -rataosuudella, jonka asemat on suunnitellut arkkitehti Thure Hellström. Asema-alueella mansardikattoinen 1916 valmistunut asemarakennus, tavaramakasiini sekä kaksi asuinrakennusta talousrakennuksineen.

Hankasalmelaiset suhtautuivat myönteisesti kunnan halki suunniteltuun ratalinjaukseen jo 1884.

Hankasalmi railway station has retained, in its structure and building stock, the character of its period of construction: it is a small 1910s rural station on the cross line connecting the Vaasa and Savo lines.

Hankasalmi railway station is a fifth-class station on the Jyväskylä-Pieksämäki line section, whose stations were designed by architect Thure Hellström. The station area contains a mansard-roofed station building completed in 1916, a goods storehouse, and two residential buildings with outbuildings.

The residents of Hankasalmi viewed the line route planned across the municipality favourably as early as 1884. However, the routing of the cross line was the subject of a lengthy dispute, and a decision was not made until 1912. In line with the route proposed by the municipality, Hankasalmi station was located only 600 metres from Kuuhankavesi, which made it possible to combine water and rail transport.

Construction of the railway between Jyväskylä and Pieksämäki began in 1913. The completion of the railway to Hankasalmi in 1918 substantially improved the onward transport of processed timber, which was important for the development of sawmill businesses in the southern parts of the parish. The waterway led to the main channel of the Kymin Uittoyhdistys and continued from there to Vaajakoski.

In 1962 Valtionrautatiet acquired the Asema sawmill, which had been established near Hankasalmi railway station in 1916. A new drying shed and a woodworking factory were built there; in the latter, parts of railway carriages were machined. The buyer of the products was mainly Valtionrautatiet itself or some other state institution. Among other things, the factory made telegraph poles for the railways and for the telegraph.
