Kuvaus
Vaalan rautatieasema-alue on yhtenäinen ja hyvin 1920- ja 1930-lukujen taitteen asussa säilynyt Oulu-Kontiomäki-radan asemamiljöö.
Vaalan asema-alue on laaja ja siinä on monipuolinen rakennuskanta 1920-luvun lopulta ja 1930-luvun alusta. Klassistisia piirteitä omaavan asemarakennuksen lisäksi alueella on tavaramakasiini, useita asuinrakennuksia, talousrakennusten rivistö ja hieman etäämpänä tiilirakenteinen veturitalli vesitorneineen. Aumakattoinen asemarakennus kuuluu rautatiehallituksen rakennussuunnitteluosastolla 1907 alkaen työskennelleen arkkitehti Thure Hellströmin todennäköisesti suunnitelemiin 1920-luvulla valmistuneiden rataosien uusklassistisiin asemarakennuksiin.
Oulu-Kontiomäki-rataosuudella sijaitseva asema-alue on keskellä Vaalan kirkonkylää ja itse asemarakennus on taajamakuvallisesti keskeisellä paikalla Asematien päätteenä.
Historia
Oulujärven laajan vesistön yhdistämistä rautateitse Ouluun pidettiin kaupungin kauppiaiden keskuudessa tärkeänä jo 1870-luvulla, mutta asian toteuttaminen pitkittyi ja vasta vuoden 1909 valtiopäivillä suunnitelmat hyväksyttiin lopullisesti. Sortokauden vuoksi päätöstä ei kuitenkaan pantu täytäntöön ja ensimmäinen maailmansota lykkäsi asian toteutumista edelleen. Oulujärven pohjoispuolella Vaalan kautta Kontiomäelle ja Nurmekseen kulkevan radan rakentaminen aloitettiin 1918, lopullisesti se valmistui vasta 1930.
Vaalan asemarakennus rakennettiin 1927 ja veturitalli 1929, jolloin junaliikenne Oulun ja Vaalan välisellä rataosuudella aloitettiin. Aseman länsipuolelle valmistui 1929 Oulujoen ylittävä neliaukkoinen Vaalankurkun rautatiesilta paikkaan, jossa Oulujoki yhtyy Oulujärveen.

Description
The railway station area at Vaala is a unified station environment on the Oulu-Kontiomäki line, well preserved in the style of the turn of the 1920s and 1930s.
The Vaala station area is extensive and contains a varied building stock from the late 1920s and early 1930s. In addition to the station building with classicist features, the area includes a goods storehouse, several residential buildings, a row of outbuildings and, somewhat further away, a brick-built locomotive shed with a water tower. The hip-roofed station building belongs to the neoclassical station buildings of the line sections completed in the 1920s, probably designed by architect Thure Hellström, who had worked in the Railway Board's building design department from 1907.
The station area on the Oulu-Kontiomäki line is in the centre of Vaala church village, and the station building itself occupies a central position in the townscape at the end of Asematie.
History
Connecting the extensive Oulujärvi water system to Oulu by rail was considered important among the town's merchants as early as the 1870s, but its implementation dragged on, and only at the 1909 Diet were the plans finally approved. Because of the period of Russification, however, the decision was not implemented, and the First World War further postponed the matter. Construction of the line running north of Oulujärvi via Vaala to Kontiomäki and Nurmes began in 1918; it was not finally completed until 1930.
The Vaala station building was built in 1927 and the locomotive shed in 1929, when train services began on the Oulu–Vaala section. A four-span railway bridge across the Oulujoki, the Vaalankurkku railway bridge, was completed west of the station in 1929, at the point where the Oulujoki joins Oulujärvi.
