The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Otavan satamarata- ja asemarakennukset muodostavat liikennehistoriallisesti mielenkiintoisen rautatie- ja vesiliikenteen solmukohdan 1800-luvun loppupuolelta. Teollisuutta ja matkustajaliikennettä palvellut kohde kertoo hyvin aikakauden tavoitteista yhdistää maa- ja vesiliikenne tehokkaaksi liikenneverkoksi.

Asemarakennus sijaitsee näkyvällä paikalla Puulaveden rannalla. Itäpuolella ovat Otavan maatalousoppilaitoksen rakennukset ja rantapellot. Ratapihan länsireunalla on lähes koko ratapihan pituinen komea kivinen laivalaituri.

Pilketehdas lopetti toimintansa 1947.

The Otava harbour line and station buildings form a transport history site of interest, a railway and water transport junction from the late 19th century. The site, which served industry and passenger traffic, illustrates well the aims of the era to combine land and water transport into an efficient transport network.

The station building stands in a prominent position on the shore of Puulavesi. To the east are the buildings of the Otava agricultural college and the shoreline fields. Along the western edge of the railway yard runs a fine stone quay almost the full length of the yard. In addition to the station building, the complex includes a goods storehouse and a shed on the quay.

The Savo line was completed in 1889, and the harbour line, built as a siding, in 1891. The length of the line was initially 1.8 km and later 2.5 km. The station building and the shed were completed in 1900.

Already in the late 19th century Puulavesi was an important timber procurement area. The lake belongs to the Kymijoki water system, and after the lake-lowering works carried out in the 1830s and 1850s it has drained through Kissakoski in Hirvensalmi into the Kymijoki. Otava harbour was at its busiest in the 1920s and 1930s.

In the steamship era, passenger ships also called at Otava harbour, from where the journey continued via Otava main station to Mikkeli. The passenger steamers s/s Puulavesi and s/s Ilmari ran from Otava to Hirvensalmi and Kortesalmi on alternate days.

Timber was brought by floating and on barges, either to be sawn at Otava or transported further. Near the station, on the shoreline, operated the Karhula and Otava sawmills. VR's own timber procurement also flourished from the 1910s onwards, and VR had its own dockyard at Otava harbour. The importance of the harbour line and the station declined in the 1960s and 1970s as sawmilling and log-floating dwindled and became concentrated.

Near the harbour there was also a Defence Forces pilketehdas, which produced fuel for the wood-gas generators in use during the Continuation War. The pilketehdas ceased operations in 1947.
