The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Sarkolan ja Vahalahden kyläkeskukset ovat hyvä esimerkki Kokemäenjoen vesistöön liittyvän jyrkkäpiirteisen metsäseudun pienimuotoisista vanhoista ryhmäkylistä. Erityisesti Vahalahden vanhassa kyläkeskustassa on säilynyt kolmen kantatalon muodostama tiivis kylämaisema.

Sarkolan ja Vahalahden kylät sijaitsevat Kuloveteen kuuluvan pitkän ja kapean lahden pohjukassa. Metsäisten mäkien rajaamat pellot viettävät loivasti kohti vesistöä. Maisemahistoriallisesti kylät ja vanha asutus ovat keskittyneet ranta-alueella oleville moreenisaarekkeille, joita savipohjaiset rinnepellot rajaavat. Kyläkeskustan lisäksi asutusta on levinnyt peltojen laidoille ja tien varsille.

Sarkolan harjanteella olevaa kyläkeskusta suojaavat mäet ja rajaavat pellot. Sarkolan kylän kokonaishahmo on säilynyt isonjaon jälkeenkin perinteisenä, kun käsityöläiset ja tilaton väestö ovat asettuneet vainioidensa lähelle muuttaneiden vanhojen maatalojen paikalle. Vanhan kylän alueella on edelleen sarkajaon aikaisella paikallaan mm. Erkkilän tila, jonka vanhimmassa rakennuksessa on toiminut kauppa 1875-1879 ja posti 1933-1951. Kylän raitilla ovat lisäksi mm. Valosen ja Kallion tilojen päärakennukset 1800-luvulta. Tapola on yksi kylän vanhimmista rakennuksista, luultavasti 1800-luvun alkupuolelta. Vanha- ja Uusi-Mattila sijaitsevat Sarkolan vanhan kylän laidalla Pöysärinmäen juurella.

Vahalahden vanhalla kylätontilla, rantaan johtavan raitin varrella, ovat tiiviinä ryhmänä Ala-Uotilan, Ala-Hemmingin ja Yli-Hemmingin tilat. Ala-Uotilan päärakennus on 1800-luvun puolivälistä ja Ala-Hemmingin rakennuskanta luultavasti 1900-luvun alusta. Ala-Hemmingin tilalla on säilynyt lisäksi vanha humalatarha. Vahalahden 1913 valmistunut kansakoulu on rantaan johtavan raitin ja Vahalahdentien risteyksessä. Tien varrella on lisäksi 1931 rakennettu seuratalo Päivölä.

The village centres of Sarkola and Vahalahti are a good example of the small, old group villages of the steep-featured forest region connected with the Kokemäenjoki watercourse system. In particular, the old village centre of Vahalahti has preserved a compact village landscape formed by three kantatila farms.

The villages of Sarkola and Vahalahti lie at the head of a long, narrow bay belonging to Kulovesi. Fields bounded by wooded hills slope gently towards the water. From the perspective of landscape history, the villages and old settlement are concentrated on moraine islets in the shore area, bounded by slope fields with clay soils. Besides the village centre, settlement has spread to the edges of fields and along roads.

The village centre on the Sarkola ridge is protected by hills and bounded by fields. The overall form of Sarkola village has remained traditional even after the isojako, as craftsmen and landless people settled on the sites of old farms that had moved close to their fields. In the old village area, the Erkkilä farm still stands in its sarkajako-era place, and in its oldest building a shop operated 1875-1879 and a post office 1933-1951. On the village street are also, among others, the main buildings of the Valonen and Kallio farms from the 19th century. Tapola is one of the village's oldest buildings, probably from the early 19th century. Vanha-Mattila and Uusi-Mattila are located on the edge of Sarkola's old village, at the foot of Pöysärinmäki.

On the old village site of Vahalahti, along the road leading to the shore, the farms of Ala-Uotila, Ala-Hemminki and Yli-Hemminki stand as a compact group. The main building of Ala-Uotila dates from the mid-19th century, and the building stock of Ala-Hemminki probably from the early 20th century. Ala-Hemminki farm has also preserved an old hop garden. The Vahalahti folk school, completed in 1913, is at the junction of the road leading to the shore and Vahalahdentie. Along the road there is also the Päivölä community hall, built in 1931.

Around the village centres spreads an open, centuries-old cultivated landscape, naturally crossed by gravel roads. Within the traditional landscape area there is also a Stone and Iron Age ancient remains concentration.

The villages of Sarkola and Vahalahti on the shore of Kulovesi are part of the wider cultural landscape of the Kokemäenjoki watercourse system, into which settlement and arable farming took root early. Numerous Stone Age settlement sites testify to prehistoric settlement.

Present village settlement began in the Middle Ages, in the case of Vahalahti at the latest in the Early Middle Ages. In the Middle Ages, Sarkola (16 farms) and Vahalahti (7 farms), villages belonging to Karkku parish, were among the largest villages of the parish. The group village of Sarkola began to break up after the isojako, when the main farms gradually moved from the village centre to connect with their fields. Afterwards, craftsmen and landless people settled on the old village plots.

From Sarkola village, among others, the Talola and Nikkilä farms moved to the ridges on the shore of Sarkolanlahti bay, and Tuomola, Mekkonen and Luiri moved to the edges of the village's field plain.

The Niemojoki river flows into Kulovesi within the area of Sarkola village. Along it there have been 9 mills and 3 sawmills, of which the Jokinen sawmill is still in operation. Building stock from the Tarkka mill has survived.

The villages of Sarkola and Vahalahti belonged to Suoniemi, which was a chapel parish of Karkku established in 1670. The municipality of Suoniemi was established in 1868 and was merged into the market town of Nokia in 1973.
