The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Kylän rakennuskanta on peräisin 1875 syttyneen tulipalon jälkeiseltä ajalta. Rakennuskanta on osin uudistunutta ja levinnyt pääosin maantien varrelle. Kylään rajoittuvalla metsäharjanteella on mahdollisesti laiduntamiseen liittyviä vanhoja kiviaitoja.

Puutikkalan asutus periytynee 1400-luvun alkupuolelta. Nykyinen nauhamainen raittiasutus syntyi 1900-luvun vaihteessa. Kylän rakennuskanta on osin uudistunut. Syrjäisestä sijainnista huolimatta Puutikkalasta oli hyvät yhteydet eri suuntiin. Kylän sijainti vesistöjen välisellä kannaksella tarjosi vesireittejä pohjoisen erämaihin ja etelän vanhoihin emäpitäjiin. Tuuloksessa Ylisestä Viipurintiestä erkaneva maantie pohjoiseen kulki Puutikkalan kautta jo 1600-luvulla.

Remote compared with the old Häme settlement areas, the Puutikkala-Karviala double village was one of the largest villages at Kukkiajärvi in the late Middle Ages. The village lies on an isthmus between lakes belonging to the Kokemäenjoki watercourse system, and the village street is part of an old main road. In Puutikkala village a compact North Häme group village has survived, based on the village structure that predated the isojako. It later spread into a linear village along the road, and the building stock reflects these stages of village structure development.

The village represents the group village type common in Häme, based on peasant landownership, in which the main farms rely on the street running through the village. The present building stock is mainly from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The mäkitupa dwellings that date from the 19th century are clearly separate, on their own hill area in the centre of the village or along the street, on land poorly suited to cultivation, as an extension of the village plots.

The village of Puutikkala lies on a low ridge on the isthmus between the extensive Kukkiajärvi and the smaller Vihajärvi. The lakes are part of the wider Kokemäenjoki watercourse system. Compact village settlement, in addition to Puutikkala, is formed by the village of Karviala, which grew together very early. The village landscape consists, in addition to the buildings, of fields bordering the waterways and the village lake, as well as a stony and wooded ridge. The village is crossed by a gently curving road that follows the shape of the terrain, and along its sides the character of the old street settlement has survived. Along the road are the main farms and old subfarms, including Yli-Anttila, Väli-Anttila, Hukki, Ali-Mattila and Yli-Mattila, as well as the community hall, the school and the Rekola farm centre, which operates as a shop. The village also has many old mäkitupa and itsellinen dwellings, which, besides the roadside, are concentrated on a small hill in the centre of the village. The building stock of the village dates from the period after the fire of 1875. The building stock has partly been renewed and is mainly spread along the road. On the wooded ridge bordering the village there are possibly old stone fences related to grazing. After the isojako and the fire, the farms of Saksala, Koivisto and Rantti, peasant farms, moved to the north of the village, and their yards have preserved traditional building stock.

Settlement at Puutikkala probably dates back to the first half of the 15th century. In the 16th century, Puutikkala and Karviala, belonging to Tuulos parish, already had seven farms, which made it a notable village around Kukkiajärvi. The village centre of Puutikkala burned in 1875, but after the fire it was rebuilt almost as compactly, at least in the central part. After the fire, Saksala, Koivisto and Rantti moved north of the village from the farms of the village centre. The present linear roadside settlement came into being at the turn of the 20th century. The building stock has partly been renewed.

Despite its remote location, Puutikkala had good connections in various directions. The village's location on an isthmus between lakes offered waterways to the northern wilderness and to the old mother parishes in the south. The road heading north, branching from Ylinen Viipurintie in Tuulos, passed through Puutikkala already in the 17th century.
