The Peräkunnantie is one of the museum roads selected by Tiehallinto to illustrate the history of road maintenance in Finland. The Peräkunnantie is an example both of peasant road and bridge building dating back to the 17th century, and of a road that was preserved essentially unchanged for centuries in a sparsely populated area, complementing the waterways and linking church villages and roadside settlement.

The narrow Peräkunnantie, preserved with a gravel surface and following the lie of the land, is part of the old road between the churches of Ruovesi and Kuru. The road was part of a route running from Ruovesi to Ylöjärvi along the western side of Näsijärvi, which probably arose to complement the area's waterways.

The oldest sections of the Kuru-Ruovesi road are in the villages of Rajalahti and Ritoniemi in Ruovesi. They are partly sections of the present Peräkunnantie museum road and partly on the Autio-Paka private road. The museum road section runs between main road 66 and Pihlajalahti. Along the road are, among others, the Selviikki and Paarlampi farms, and in Pihlajalahti the former Ahola coaching inn. At Paarlampi a stone bridge built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries has survived. Peräkunnantie has retained its traditional hilly and winding alignment, and attractive views open out from the road.

The Kuru-Ruovesi road, which complemented the Näsijärvi waterway, shortcut the rapids and led to boat landings and later to a steamboat pier. It was first marked on maps in connection with the isojako in the 1790s. The local importance of the main road expanded somewhat in the mid-19th century, when it was marked in travel guides and maps, influenced by general population growth and the beginnings of industrialisation. The road was known as a general road from the late 1840s, when it was listed in the category "Allmänna landsvägor med Gästgifvaregårdar". The Peräkunta road's suitability for driving improved in the 1860s thanks to repair work by the people of Kuru and Ruovesi. The road was straightened in 1895-1901, when the old route from Pakka church boat harbour to Ruovesi church remained as the private road Autio-Pakka. Plans to improve the main road continued from 1951 onwards, and the new Ruovesi-Kuru main road was built in 1987-1990. In connection with this, a section of about seven kilometres on the Ruovesi side was left as a museum road.
