Kuvaus
Kotiniemen kasvatuslaitos on laitoslajinsa rakennusperintönä varhainen, arkkitehtuuriltaan ja ympäristönä korkeatasoinen näyte valtion järjestämän lasten suojelukasvatuksen rakennetuista puitteista nk. huoltovaltion aikakaudella.
Kotiniemen kasvatuslaitos sijaitsee asutuksesta syrjässä Ajosjärven pohjoisrannan Kotiniemellä. Laitoksen 1900-luvun alkuvuosina noussut rakennuskanta asuntoloista maatalousrakennuksiin on arkkitehtonisesti yhtenäinen. Rakennukset on ryhmitelty väljästi puistomaiseen ympäristöön.

Description
As built heritage of its type, the Kotiniemi educational institution is an early and architecturally and environmentally high-quality example of the built framework of state-organised educational care for children in the so-called huoltovaltio era.
The Kotiniemi educational institution lies apart from settlement, on the Kotiniemi area on the northern shore of Ajosjärvi. The building stock that rose in the early years of the 20th century, from dormitories to agricultural buildings, is architecturally uniform. The buildings are loosely grouped in a park-like setting. They are brick structures apart from the wooden director's villa. Around the institution's central square stand the administration building, the kitchen building, the school building and dormitory buildings. Behind a row of four dormitory buildings, a lake-like landscape glimpses through. The impressive ensemble is enlivened by the striking or even amusing details fitted to the exterior architecture of many of the buildings, such as the brick reliefs of horses and cows on the stable and cowshed building, or the tool motifs of the smithy. The institution has remained in use broadly similar to its original use, and its historical building stock, together with its surroundings, has survived well and is carefully maintained.
History
State educational institutions began to be established after the Criminal Code of 1889 first provided for the placement of boys and girls aged 7-14 in such institutions. The country's first institution for boys (the Koivula institution in Tuusula, now Kerava prison) began operating in 1891. When the premises proved quickly inadequate, preparations for establishing a new institution for boys were begun around the turn of the century, at "Kylmälä farm in the village of Ajostaipale in the parish of Ruovesi".
The Kotiniemi educational institution for boys in Vilppula was designed and also built as a single construction phase in 1902-1907. The designer, the architect of the building administration Hugo Lindberg, had familiarised himself with educational institutions in various Nordic countries. The educational institution, later a koulukoti, was closed in 1988, and the premises came into use by the prison administration as a reserve prison, an open institution called Vilppula Prison.
