Kuvaus
Vanha tie kulkee kylän eteläreunaa, minne on keskittynyt kylän kantatilojen vanha, peräpohjalainen rakennuskanta.
Historia
Muonio sai vankan uudisasutuksen Ruotsin Länsipohjan suomalaisesta talonpoikaisväestöstä 1600- ja 1700-lukujen kuluessa. Asutus keskittyi Muonionjokivarteen ja muutamille eräjärville. Muonion kirkonkylä tuhoutui Lapin sodassa kirkkoa lukuunottamatta, mutta Ylimuonion kylä sen sijaan säästyi suurimmaksi osaksi.

Description
Ylimuonio village is the northernmost of the agricultural villages in the Tornionlaakso and one of the northernmost in the whole of Lapland. The North Ostrobothnian-type yards of this ribbon-like roadside village, set in the broad landscape along the Muonionjoki, have exceptionally largely escaped the destruction of the Lapland War.
Ylimuonio village is laid out as a ribbon-like chain along the Muonionjoki and the road on its bank. Most of the village is on the southern slope of Utkuvaara, but the village continues to Nulusniemi on the south side of Utkujärvi. The old road runs along the southern edge of the village, where the old building stock of the original farms of the village, of the Peräpohjola type, is concentrated.
History
Muonio received a substantial new settlement from the Finnish-speaking peasant population of the Länsipohja region of Sweden during the 17th and 18th centuries. Settlement concentrated along the Muonionjoki and on some wilderness lakes. The church village of Muonio was destroyed in the Lapland War apart from the church, but Ylimuonio village, by contrast, was largely spared.
