The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Vuotungin kylässä, joka on Kuusamon vanhimpia asuinpaikkoja, on säilynyt perinteistä koillismaalaista viljelysmaisemaa ja runsaasti perinteistä rakennuskantaa.

Vuotunkijärven rannoille asettuneen kyläryhmän muodostavat Käkilehto, Saarenkylä, Heponiemi, Joentausta, Alavuotunkijärven ympärys ja Jyrkänkosken tienoo. Uuskäkelässä on kolmen asuinrakennuksen, tallin ja navetan muodostama ehyt, hyvin säilynyt pihapiiri. Heponiemessä on vanhoja lappalaisten asuinpaikkoja.

Isosta Kuukaksesta Vuotunkijärveen laskevassa Jyrkänkoskessa on 1913 perustettu entinen liippatehdas. Saha on lopettanut toimintansa 1980-luvulla.

Kuusamo erotettiin Kemin Lapista 1675 omaksi seurakunnaksi. Seudulle muodostui Kainuusta, Pudasjärveltä, Iistä sekä Tornio- ja Kemijokivarresta uudisasutusta.

Vuotungin kylän vanhimmat kantatalot Kantola, Vuotunki eli Pohjola, Heponiemi, Käkilehto ja Alavuotunki perustettiin 1700-luvun loppuun mennessä.

In the village of Vuotunki, one of the oldest settlements in Kuusamo, a traditional Koillismaa farmland landscape and a substantial stock of traditional buildings have survived.

The village group on the shores of Lake Vuotunkijärvi comprises Käkilehto, Saarenkylä, Heponiemi, Joentausta, the surroundings of Alavuotunkijärvi and the area around Jyrkänkoski. At Uuskäkelä there is an intact, well-preserved farmyard formed by three residential buildings, a stable and a cowshed. Heponiemi contains old Sámi settlement sites.

At Jyrkänkoski, where the Iso Kuukas flows into Vuotunkijärvi, stands a former liippa factory established in 1913. The sawmill ceased operations in the 1980s.

Kuusamo was separated from Kemin Lappi in 1675 and became an independent parish. New settlement in the area came from Kainuu, Pudasjärvi, Ii, and the Tornio and Kemijoki riverbanks.

The oldest original farms of Vuotunki village, Kantola, Vuotunki or Pohjola, Heponiemi, Käkilehto and Alavuotunki, were established by the end of the 18th century.
