The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Eri rakennusvaiheita edustavat alueet ilmentävät sahayhdyskunnan hierarkiaa.

Pihlavassa on vanhan 1900 valmistuneen saharakennuksen sisälle asennettu moderni sahateknologia. Nykyiseen laajuuteen saha rakennettiin 1910-luvulla. Aarne Ervi piirsi vanhaan höyrykonehuoneeseen funktionalistisen ruokalan 1949. Punatiilinen kuitulevytehdas rakennettiin 1948 arkkitehti Olav Hammarströmin piirustusten mukaan. Ranta-alueen maamerkkinä on suuri sahatavaran kuivaamo.

Pihlavan tehtaan välittömässä läheisyydessä on Ahlström Osayhtiön sahan johtajan ja virkailija-asuntojen alue Kaunismäki. Tehtaanjohtajan asunto on rakennettu 1946 Alvar Aallon tyyppipiirustuksin. Kolme virkailijataloa on rakennettu 1920-luvulla arkkitehti Karl Lindahlin suunnitelmien mukaan. Virkailijoiden ketjutalon suunnitteli arkkitehti Olav Hammarström 1940-luvulla. Atriumtalojen rivin suunnitteli arkkitehti Kristian Gullichsen. Kaunismäen luoteispuolella alkaa huvila-alue, jonka huviloista kaksi liittyy Ahlström -suvun historiaan. (kts. Pihlavan huvila-alue)

Sahan kaakkoispuolella on 1920-luvulla rakennettujen mansardikattoisten työväenasuntojen rivistö, Halssi. Rakennukset suunnitteli arkkitehti Karl Lindahl.

Sahan eteläpuolelle jäävä Kappalemaa edustaa sahan vanhinta työväenasutusaluetta. Rakennuskannaltaan eri-ikäinen alue rakentui alunperin vapaamuotoisesti. Rakennuskanta on pääosin 1800-luvun loppupuolelta ja 1900-luvun alkupuolelta. Rakennuksissa on usein käytetty hyväksi sahalta hankittua jätepuuta. Koulurakennukset valmistuivat 1920-luvulla.

Rannalla oleva suuri kuivaamo valmistui 1954.

Sahan työväen asutus keskittyi sahan ympäristöön. Vanhimpia, vapaasti kasvaneita asuinalueita olivat Kappalemaan, Holman, Viinahaminan ja Sahamäen asuinalueet. Arkkitehtien suunnitelmiin perustuivat Pihlajan Halssin työväenasuinalue ja Kaunismäen tehtaan johdolle ja virkailijoille tarkoitetut asunnot. Tehtaan ympärille kehittyi pieni teollisuustaajama, jossa tehdas huolehti alkuaikoina useista yhteiskunnalle kuuluvista toiminnoista. Saha rakennutti mm. ensimmäisen koulun 1800-luvun loppupuolella.

Pihlava oli pitkään Ahlström yhtiön tuotannoltaan suurin saha. Se jatkaa edelleen toimintaansa uusimmalla sahatekniikalla varustettuna.

The building stock of the Pihlava sawmill and its associated community contains layers from a remarkably long period. The sawmill at Pihlava, established in the 1870s, is, alongside the Porin Isonsanta and Haukipudas Martinniemi sawmills, the only surviving large sawmill building of the steam sawmill era. The sawmill is associated with the Kaunismäki office staff houses and the Kappalemaa and Halssi workers' residential areas. The areas representing different building phases reflect the social hierarchy of the sawmill community.

At Pihlava, modern sawmill technology has been installed inside the old sawmill building completed in 1900. The sawmill was built to its present extent in the 1910s. In 1949 Aarne Ervi designed a functionalist canteen in the old steam engine room. The red-brick fibreboard factory was built in 1948 to the drawings of architect Olav Hammarström. A large sawn-timber drying kiln is a landmark of the waterfront area.

Immediately adjacent to the Pihlava mill is Kaunismäki, the residential area for the manager and office staff of the Ahlström Osayhtiö sawmill. The factory manager's house was built in 1946 to Alvar Aalto's standard-type drawings. Three office staff houses were built in the 1920s to the designs of architect Karl Lindahl. The office staff terraced house was designed by architect Olav Hammarström in the 1940s. The row of atrium houses was designed by architect Kristian Gullichsen. To the north-west of Kaunismäki begins a villa area, two of whose villas are connected with the history of the Ahlström family (see Pihlava villa area).

To the south-east of the sawmill is Halssi, a row of mansard-roofed workers' dwellings built in the 1920s. The buildings were designed by architect Karl Lindahl.

Kappalemaa, located to the south of the sawmill, represents the sawmill's oldest workers' residential area. The area, whose building stock is of varying ages, originally developed in an informal layout. The building stock dates mainly from the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Buildings often made use of waste timber obtained from the sawmill. The school buildings were completed in the 1920s.

The Pihlava steam sawmill, established at the mouth of the sparsely populated Kokemäenjoki river, was built in 1874 - 1875 by Fredriksfors Osakeyhtiö, a company founded by Swedish businessmen. The plot, comprising small islands and shoreline, was leased from the Rieskala farm. After the company's bankruptcy, the sawmill passed to Antti Ahlström in 1889. Already at the time of purchase, the sawmill was one of the largest industrial enterprises in the Pori region. Ahlström modernised it to make it profitable by renewing its machinery, enlarging the barge slipway and having electric lighting installed. A machine workshop was built in connection with the sawmill in 1894. The sawmill buildings were completely destroyed in a fire in 1900 and rebuilt the same year. The sawmill was extended in 1916 according to drawings supplied by the Swedish company Bolinder.

After the wars, significant extensions included the fibreboard factory in 1948 and the power station. The large drying kiln on the shore was completed in 1954.

The sawmill's workers' housing was concentrated around the sawmill. The oldest, freely developed residential areas were Kappalemaa, Holma, Viinahamina and Sahamäki. Based on architects' plans were the Halssi workers' residential area in Pihlaja and the housing for the factory management and office staff at Kaunismäki. A small industrial settlement developed around the factory, in which the factory in its early years took care of many functions that were otherwise the responsibility of society. Among other things, the sawmill built the first school in the second half of the 19th century.

For a long time Pihlava was the largest sawmill in the Ahlström company by output. It continues to operate, equipped with the latest sawmill technology.
