Kuvaus
Santakarin pooki kuvastaa havainnollisesti tunnusmajakan roolia Rauman historiallisen kaupunkiväylän ensimmäisenä ja tärkeimpänä merimerkkinä.
Tunnusmajakan lähiympäristö on säilynyt rakentamattomana ja avoimena. Santakarin 1857 valmistunut tunnusmajakka sijaitsee Rauman satamaan lounaasta johtavan väylän uloimmassa pisteessä. Niemi-Santakari on noin 500 metriä pitkä lähinnä matalaa heinikkoa kasvava kallioluoto. Sen länsipuolella on rannaton meri ja itäpuolelta alkaa Rauman edustan saaristo. Keskellä saarta sijaitseva tunnusmajakka on luodon ainoa rakennus.
Majakkarakennus on yhä alueen keskeisin maamerkki ja sen historiallinen funktio on selkeä. Kahdeksankulmainen, kivisokkelille perustettu 18,6 metriä korkea puutorni on mielenkiintoinen esimerkki 1800-luvun merimerkkiarkkitehtuurista.
Historia
Rauman porvarit rakennuttivat 1839 Niemi-Santakarin luodolle hirsimökkiä muistuttavan tunnusmajakan. Krimin sodan alettua merimerkki purettiin 1854. Sodan päätyttyä luotsi- ja majakkalaitos rakennutti samalle paikalle uuden tunnusmajakan, jonka suunnitteli lääninarkkitehti G.Th. Chiewitz. 1879 pooki aiottiin muuttaa valomajakaksi, mutta hanke jäi toteuttamatta. Santakarin luota alkanut väylä mataloitui 1900-luvun kuluessa siinä määrin, että suuremmat laivat eivät enää voineet käyttää sitä. Väylä kuitenkin kunnostettiin 1970-luvulla Rauman syväväyläksi. Vuonna 1996 merenkulkulaitos luovutti merimerkkinä tarpeettomaksi käyneen pookin Rauman kaupungille. Korjauksen lähtökohtana on ollut rakennuksen ulkoasu 1880-luvulla.

Description
The Santakari pooki vividly illustrates the role of the daymark as the first and most important navigational mark of Rauma's historic town fairway.
The immediate surroundings of the daymark have remained undeveloped and open. The daymark on Santakari, completed in 1857, stands at the outermost point of the fairway leading south-west from Rauma harbour. Niemi-Santakari is an approximately 500-metre-long rocky skerry, mostly covered by low grass. To its west lies the open sea, and to its east begins the archipelago off Rauma. The daymark, located in the middle of the island, is the skerry's only building.
The daymark building is still the most central landmark in the area, and its historical function is clear. The eight-sided wooden tower, 18.6 metres high, built on a stone plinth, is an interesting example of 19th-century daymark architecture.
History
In 1839, the burghers of Rauma had a daymark resembling a log cabin built on the Niemi-Santakari skerry. When the Crimean War began, the daymark was demolished in 1854. After the war ended, the pilotage and lighthouse administration (luotsi- ja majakkalaitos) built a new daymark on the same site, designed by provincial architect G.Th. Chiewitz. In 1879 there was a plan to convert the pooki into a light beacon, but the project was not carried out. The fairway starting from Santakari became shallower during the 20th century to such an extent that larger ships could no longer use it. However, the fairway was improved in the 1970s to become the Rauma deep-water fairway. In 1996, the merenkulkulaitos transferred the pooki, no longer needed as a daymark, to Rauma town. The starting point for the restoration has been the exterior of the building in the 1880s.
