The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Markkamäen omakotialueen vanhin rakennuskanta on esimerkki teollisuusyritysten tukemasta sodan jälkeisestä omakotirakentamisesta. Sotien jälkeisellä asunto- ja rakennusainepulan aikakaudella järjestely on antanut työväestölle mahdollisuuden omaan asuntoon ja sitouttanut teollisuustyövoimaa tehtaaseen.

Jälleenrakennuskaudelle tyypillinen, yhtenäinen Markkamäen omakotialue sijaitsee Äänekosken keskustan pohjoispuolella viheralueiden ja uudempien asuinalueiden ympäröimänä.

Asuinrakennukset ovat kiinni Mäkikadusta koilliseen lähtevien poikkikatujen linjassa ja talousrakennukset muodostavat oman rivistönsä tonttien takareunalle. Markkamäen etelärinteen alkuperäisten tonttien rakennuskanta on säilynyt yhtenäisenä; vähäinen uudisrakentaminen on keskittynyt alueen koilliskulmalle. Asuma-alueelta avautuu laaja näköala Keiteleelle.

Teollisuustoiminta alkoi Äänekoskella 1896, kun Äänekoski Aktiebolaget hankki alueelta useita maatiloja. Laajaan metsäomaisuuteen sisältyivät kosket, joiden rannalle perustettiin puuhiomo ja kartonkitehdas. Äänekosken tehtaat olivat 1941-1953 osa metalli- ja konepajateollisuudesta tunnettua Wärtsilä-yhtymää (Wärtsilä Selluloosa Oy, Äänekosken tehtaat). Wärtsilän tultua omistajaksi teollista toimintaa laajennettiin Äänekoskella 1940-luvulla sulfiittispriitehtaalla.

Äänekosken tehtaiden työntekijät asutettiin pääosin tehtaan rakennuttamiin asuntoihin, tunnetuimpia alueita olivat 1920-luvulla rakennettu Pukkimäki ja sotien jälkeen aloitettu Markkamäki, joka sai nimensä tonteille määritellystä nimellisestä yhden markan hinnasta.

Sodan jälkeistä asunto- ja rakennusmateriaalipulaa helpottamaan Wärtsilä solmi 1947 perustetun omakotirakentajain yhdistyksen kanssa sopimuksen, jossa yhtiö sitoutui myymään vähintään kuusi vuotta palvelleille työntekijöille n. 1300 neliön tontin yhden markan kauppahinnasta, antamaan rahallista rakennusavustusta, rakentamaan alueen kadut ja viemäröinnin sekä avustamaan rakennusaineiden hankinnassa ja kuljetuksessa. Tehtaan teettämät puolitoistakerroksisten omakotitalojen tyyppipiirustukset valmistuivat 1944.

Ensimmäiset 20 tonttia arvottiin kesällä 1947 ja hieman myöhemmin arvottiin 27 tonttia lisää. Rakentaminen alkoi samana kesänä ja ensimmäiset omakotitalot valmistuivat 1948.

Markkamäen omakotialueen rakentaminen jatkui aina 1980-luvulle saakka.

The oldest building stock of the Markkamäki detached housing area is an example of post-war detached house construction supported by industrial companies. In the post-war period of housing and building material shortages, the arrangement gave workers the opportunity of their own home and tied industrial labour to the factory.

The uniform Markkamäki detached housing area, typical of the post-war reconstruction period, lies north of the Äänekoski town centre, surrounded by green areas and newer residential areas.

The residential buildings are aligned with the cross streets running north-east from Mäkikatu, and the outbuildings form their own row along the rear edges of the plots. The building stock on the original plots of the southern slope of Markkamäki has remained intact; the little new construction has concentrated in the north-eastern corner of the area. The residential area opens to a wide view over Keitele.

Industrial activity began in Äänekoski in 1896, when Äänekoski Aktiebolaget acquired several farms in the area. The extensive forest holdings included rapids, on whose banks a groundwood mill and a cardboard factory were established. The Äänekoski mills were part of the Wärtsilä group, known for its metal and engineering industry, from 1941 to 1953 (Wärtsilä Selluloosa Oy, Äänekosken tehtaat). After Wärtsilä became the owner, industrial activity in Äänekoski was expanded in the 1940s with a sulphite spirit factory.

The workers at the Äänekoski mills were mainly housed in dwellings built by the factory. The best-known areas were Pukkimäki, built in the 1920s, and Markkamäki, begun after the wars, which took its name from the nominal price of one markka set for its plots.

To ease the post-war shortage of housing and building materials, Wärtsilä in 1947 concluded an agreement with the detached house builders' association established that year. Under the agreement the company undertook to sell plots of approximately 1300 square metres for one markka to employees who had served for at least six years, to provide financial building grants, to build the area's streets and sewerage, and to assist with the procurement and transport of building materials. The type drawings for one-and-a-half-storey detached houses commissioned by the factory were completed in 1944.

The first 20 plots were allocated by lot in summer 1947, and slightly later a further 27 plots were drawn by lot. Construction began the same summer, and the first detached houses were completed in 1948.

Construction of the Markkamäki detached housing area continued into the 1980s.
